The resignation of Gov. Robert Bentley is expected later this afternoon, the political culmination of more than a year of controversy surrounding his relationship with former aide Rebekah Caldwell Mason.
The official announcement from the governor's office is expected at any time. At around 4 p.m., Bentley was booked into Montgomery County Jail on two misdemeanor charges related to campaign finance violation. Each carried a $300 bond.
The resignation comes after Friday's report from the House Justice Committee detailing Bentley's relationship with Mason, including allegations the governor used state law enforcement and other state resources to facilitate the relationship. Bentley had repeatedly said he wouldn't resign but talks reportedly started over the weekend to allow the two-term Republican to step down.
Bentley becomes the fourth Alabama governor to step down or be forced out of office.
If it was a democrat he would be eligible to run for President now

I am not going to bother comparing his behavior with a democrat’s behavior. Bentley is supposed to be a Christian. His wife is supposedly a very kind Christian woman, who after 50 years of marriage, was publicly humiliated by his stupid behavior. That wrinkled up, homely old man ruined his 50 year marriage, broke his wife’s heart, and embarrassed his children for some split-tail who wouldn’t have touched him with a ten foot pole if he hadn’t been governor. That’s all on him.
He should have changed his sur name to Clintoon, and held a news conference and blame his behavior on severe TDS. Then ask the voters to define sex.
Have both Clintoons’s on the stage with him. Then, declare himself to be a new democrat and staying in office.
The Cast of Hamilton would then sing the Star Spangled Banner for him with the Clintoons.
CNN would say, that he is the new face of American politics, former republicans joining the democrats due to Trump, to save America and the world.

Appointment until Nov 2018 might be legal but seemed wrong. If earlier election is possible, unlike here in NJ, seems to serve public. But 17th Amendment must end someday.
