Vanity:Question about the United fiasco
Myself | 4/10/2017 | Myself

My husband is a Gold member on United and is totally disgusted by what they did to that poor man. I thought of a great marketing idea for other airlines. If they offered a comparable status on their airline to fly, my husband would jump at the chance to fly with them. Do you think the other airlines would think of this? I think so many people would switch over to their airline in a heartbeat. Or is this not an option for them?

The flight was overbooked.

By the companies own admission it was not overbooked.

United chose to place 'standby' passengers above booked passengers.

The company was a jerk.

The passenger reacted rationally to their jerkiness.

I pray for the same presence of mind if a similar situation happens to me.

I completely agree. Don’t know why people are arguing the policy. The issue is was the amount of force used by the officer excessive.

I still can’t figure out why they singled this Dr. out for removal. Surely there had to be some other person who would disembark willingly, get another flight and/or an upgrade.

Yes, but that assumes that people don’t know that they can just hold out until they get something outrageous.

American Airlines: “No bloody messes on our flights.”

It wasn’t standby passengers, it was 4 UA flight crew that needed to be in Louisville for work on another flight.

For what the negative fallout of this costs United could have chartered individual jets for each crew person.

I believe they normally fly standby.

Do you have any information that they were paying passengers, as this man was?

If so, I may need to rethink my position.

And what does it matter if they needed to be at work?

Didn’t the beat-up passenger need to be at work too?

Maybe. The overbooked policy still applies regardless of why.

No airline will put stand-by passengers over revenue passengers—doesn’t work that way. Crew? Yes, non-rev stand-by—No.

Another post said the rules for evicting a passenger are explicitly codified by the Department of Transportation.

That might explain it. Without those codified rules, an airline employee could have just asked for volunteers and picked one.

Far too easy and practical.

That fact bothered me, too.

A reasonable policy would be to have some cheaper, bootable seats if you want to be able to insert personnel for transfer. But, that doesn’t maximize revenue. I guess there were no stand by passengers on this flight.

Oh, dear...your story sounds like a bad scene out of a John Candy movie.

“Operated by (YX) Republic Airlines on behalf of (UA) United Airlines”

While there is no excuse for what took place, this is not a flight that is actually operated by United Airlines. As a consequence, we need to see UA taking serious action against this regional carrier whose planes carry their livery.

“Flipping out when removed from an airplane statistically never works to your advantage.”

It definitely won’t work to United’s advantage.

Lol. I am probed and prodded and irradiated enough at my doctor and I know my doctor by first name.

And the drill sergeant flight attendants are not very pleasant these days.

And if you are lucky, you get a bag of peanuts and a soda. Gone are the days of a decent meal or if you want a meal, you get a tortilla wrapped mystery meat thing at ripoff prices.

And the seats seem to be smaller and they pack the passengers in like sardines or you can pay extra for an extra couple of inches of extra legroom.

And then there is lost luggage — how many days is it legal to wear the same clothes and undergarments?

Other than that, flying is fun. :)

I can only assume that somewhere in the small print Unitied and other airlines have a stipulation about what to do if someone MUST deplane....and when you buy you’re ticket, you agree to it.
