Google is to start displaying fact-checking labels in its search results to highlight news and information that has been vetted and show whether it is considered to be true or false, as part of its efforts to help combat the spread of misinformation and fake news.
The fact-checking feature, which was first introduced to Google News in the UK and US in October, will now be displayed as an information box in general search results as well as news search results globally.
The small snippets display information about the claim made by a particular page or site and who made the claim, as well as the results of fact checking on the highlighted claim. The fact checks are not performed by Google, but by named trusted publishers and fact-checkers using an open system to mark claims as having been checked.
Cong Yu from Google and Justin Kosslyn from fact-check partner Jigsaw said: With thousands of new articles published online every minute of every day, the amount of content confronting people online can be overwhelming. And unfortunately, not all of it is factual or true, making it hard for people to distinguish fact from fiction.
As we make fact checks more visible in search results, we believe people will have an easier time reviewing and assessing these fact checks, and making their own informed opinions.
Fact check boxes will not be displayed for every search result, and only publishers that are algorithmically determined to be an authoritative source of information will be included in the program Google said. . .

A new term will arise...fake vetting.
Let me guess. Washington Post, CNN, and NYT will be the arbiter of what is fake news.
If these guys are going to do this, then take away their IP. These have become news outlets for a different generation. Newspapers never had IP of the printed word. Facebook, Google, Amazon et al should not be exclusive outlets because of IP restrictions.
Better or worse than Snopes?
Who will fact check them?
Yeah? Who watches the watchers?
Very dangerous
CBS: False <- google reviewed
NBC: False <- google reviewed
ABC: False <- google reviewed
NY Times: False <- google reviewed
LA Times: False <- google reviewed
Washington Post: False <- google reviewed
There is not a single news organization anywhere on this planet that publishes just the plain unvarnished facts. They all spin it to their political view. Google’s “vetting” will be done with an overall liberal progressive spin. No doubt whatsoever about that.
Just like “Fahrenheit 451” on a cyber, global scale.
The ‘watchers’.....and they are all in cahoots, it seems.
Who fact checks the fact checkers?
In fact, who fact checks the fact checkers who are checking the other fact checkers?
>>Better or worse than Snopes?<<
Better or worse yodeler than the best in Harlem?
I disagree. One American News reports news without analyzing it to death. The only problem is after the first hour, they mostly just repeat it.
I’d be all for vetting the headlines to see if they match the story.
Cool. One in a million.
“first introduced to Google News in the UK and US in October”
I’ve never seen this.
Not just fake “vetting.”
But sheer ignorance and utter bull crap.
