[WaPo's] David Ignatius: Trump Has Restored ‘Credibility of American Power’
Washington Free Beacon ^ | 4/7/17 | Cameron Cawthorne

Posted on 04/07/2017 7:20:21 AM PDT by markomalley

David Ignatius of the Washington Post praised President Donald Trump on Friday for launching a military strike against an airfield in Syria Thursday night, saying that he has restored "credibility" of America's power.

"Morning Joe" co-host Joe Scarborough said Trump appeared to be following in former President Barack Obama's footsteps in regards to a hands-off approach to Syria, but has reversed his policy because he recognized the death and destruction in Syria allegedly at the hands of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

"I think he found the consequences of embracing Assad which is in effect what he did, just too horrifying," Ignatius said. "I thought the president was sincere in saying, looking at those photographs of the little children choking to death as they died was abhorrent, and I think he said frankly, ‘I change my mind.'"

Ignatius went on to say that Trump chose the "least drastic" military option that Secretary of Defense James Mattis provided, but still indicated that "he has acted."

"Can you explain why so many people, not only in Washington or the foreign policy community, but across the world were disheartened and concerned after Assad's first chemical weapon attack was met with no response and what those fears, how those fears would have multiplied if they had not been answered this second time?" Scarborough asked.

Ignatius responded by referencing foreign policy under the Obama administration.

"When a president says, as Barack Obama did, that the use of chemical weapons will cross a red line, established by the United States and then doesn't take action to enforce the red line, air goes out of the balloon," Ignatius said. "And we watched that with President Obama."

Ignatius said that by taking that action, Trump has restored the "credibility of American power."

"In terms of the credibility of American power, I think most traditional Washington commentators would say he's put more umph, more credibility back into it," Ignatius said.

Having WAPO, media, McInsane, and Lindsey praise what he did should give us all pause.

the real test will be what Madcow says.

Well all those people who blindly supported the last admin, are now stuck with whatever it takes to clean up the mess that they helped create.

Interesting how much support is getting from the Left...Hmmm?

When WAPO is on your side, you know you’ve arrived!

And now on to Ryancare 2.0! “It’s a beautiful thing!”

I think cleaning up that mess would be best accomplished by letting the Syrians kill each other any way they choose. I could not care less about Syria and do not want to see us involved in another middle east war.

With all the praise for Trump from the liberals, it makes me question Trump’s judgment.

As it should. Helping ISIS is an Obama gig.

“Interesting how much support is getting from the Left...Hmmm?”

Actually, it is getting a lot of support from across the political spectrum. Syria gassed their own citizens. Why someone isn’t screaming for Assad to go before the Hague for crimes against humanity is beyond me.

Trump did the right thing. We pretty much went after Saddam for the same crap.

And that is quite fine. I was only providing an answer as to why the trump haters are supporting him. They were the idiots who fueled the fiascos in the Mideast going back to the arab spring era.

There are no good guys in Syria. The attack fixed a couple of things at very little cost. China, North Korea, Iran all had to do a double take as they discovered Obama is no longer in the White House.

I don’t want us in another war and I hope President Trump will not allow us to be drug into one by the War War cheerleaders

The offset to that is that he is getting praise for doing exactly the opposite of what Obama did.

Having slept on it, perhaps I am now open to the possibility that what you're saying is true. I am willing now to see what happens, although I'm still a bit skeptical. I am more alarmed by that statement by Mattis that they intend to remove Assad from power, Trump needs to shut him up.

This strike was one of the most brilliant political moves I’ve seen in my lifetime:

1. Placates the do-gooders
2. Placates the neocons (for a few months)
3. Absolutely ends the “Russian Stooge” meme the Dims have been working for the last 6 months
4. Establishes political momentum for the Defense budget increase
5. Caused Xi to know Trump is unpredictable and will take military action any time it pleases him
6. Embarrassed the Russians and showed their support does not preclude a US strike. Hear that Iran?
7. Engendered esprit de corps in the ranks
8. Ended any further discussion of disarray in the White House
9. Emboldened some “moderate” mid-east countries to, just maybe, put some troops on the ground in Syria...now that they know the US is “in”.

And so many more I haven’t though of.

This was a brilliant political act that had very little effect on the ground in Syria but changed the geopolitical calculus of everyone in the world.

It’s not our job to remove anyone from power. We did that in Iraq and look how that turned out, then there is Libia......

If the powers in the Middle East want to change power I have no problem playing the friend who stand quietly on the sidelines and makes sure our friends are playing on a level playing field but I don’t want to lose American lives rebuilding nations when our own is being neglected.
