Scandal: While the momentum behind the Russia-election-meddling story chugs along, the claim that sparked the entire drama that Russians hacked the Democratic National Committee appears to have suffered a big blow. Does anybody care?
The Russia connection was first made by a private cybersecurity firm whose work has been treated as unassailable until last week, when it had to rewrite and retract statements made to support that claim.
To understand what happened and why it is significant requires going through a brief timeline of events.
Back in June 2016, the DNC hired a private cybersecurity firm called CrowdStrike to determine who had hacked into their servers and absconded with emails often embarrassing that later got released to the public by WikiLeaks. CrowdStrike said Russia was behind the hack.
In July, intelligence agencies followed up, telling the White House that they had "high confidence" that Russia was behind the hack.
However, it turns out that they never had direct access to the DNC's hacked computer servers. The FBI said it repeatedly requested access and the DNC denied it to them, according to The Hill.
A source told The Hill that, as a result of this lack of access, "the FBI had no choice but to rely upon a third party for information."
The problem is that the evidence provided by CrowdStrike as proof that Russia was behind the hack had some experts scratching their heads

They're throwing in the word, "alleged" now. They didn't do that a few days ago.
Good catch.
There will be a full court press now in the MSM to deflect from the Susan Rice story.
Every single republican this weekend let this slide when Russian hacking was brought up this weekend.
“IBD editorial writer” = Bush RINO Media...and always pimping his own blog
Hey IBD, did YEB! buy you new knee pads?
“the alleged Russian hacking”
They have yet to produce even a shred of evidence that Russia hacked anything.
All they have is the opinion of a handful of Obama appointees (Clapper, Comey, etc)
The only thing leaked in this “scandal” was Podesta’s risotto recipes and other trivial stuff from his Gmail account. The whole Russian scandal is a joke.
But now we have Susan Rice reading NSA phone transcripts of US citizens, without a court warrant, and then leaking it to the press. She is going down.
Last night for the first time in months NBC Nightly News didn’t mention a peep about Russian hacking or the lack of evidence of Trump’s charges including “wiretapping”. Dropped all of it like a hot potato. Covered storms, N. Korea and Harrison Ford who mistakenly landed on a taxi strip a couple months ago. Not a word about Rice.
The narrative has changed dramatically.
A Never-Trump friend who is big into international intrigue resigned party leadership and drifted into the background when Trump’s nomination became certain. She presented CrowdStrike as the gold standard for such analyses when the story came out last summer. I never expected that Crowd Strike would come crashing down, but here we are.
I hope she takes more with her as she falls!
I'm afraid Rice has always been set up to be thrown under the bus.....alone.
At night, I dream about Obama, ValJar, and the Clintons being so disgraced that we never have to hear from them or about them again!
Why on earth would an increasingly aggressive, expansionist Russia, prefer a strong-on-military team like Trump-Pence over a very weak democrat one? The Obama-Hillary admin practically decimated our military, at a time when both Russia and China are flexing their muscles and on the move. That plus all they did to strengthen Russia’s hand, including Obama’s handing Putin everything he wanted and more on missile defense and nukes, including the Iran nuke deal that Putin loves so much. And also the Clinton-Obama-Podesta Uranium-One deal, where the Russians ended up with 20% of our uranium production! The slimeball DemonRats are simply trying to deflect attention away from their own collaborations with KGB Putin.
Reputation is a funny sort of currency. You can only spend it once, and once you do, it's gone forever.
republicans are democrats.
No difference between them.
What do they have in common?
Greed.
Deep hatred for the deep state.
The slimeball DemonRats are simply trying to deflect attention away from their own collaborations with KGB Putin.
Their preferred modus operendi. They project so much as to shame a movie theater.
Hard to fight a two minute hate with logic and reason.
Why don’t you go troll somewhere else?
“...do not understand why every Republican is not pointing out the origins of the “Russian hacking” everytime this is brought up. They need to pound it ...”
Agreed!! Last night Tucker Carlson had on some dem and although Tucker did a reasonably good job - he never truly went on offence by bringing up that the only “evidence” has been backtracked by Crowdstrike (I think Crowdstrke is the name of it - I didn’t relook this up and am going from memory) and that the DNC never let the FBI examine their computers to validate the claim.
So frustrating!!
Yes - Crowdstrike as the article says.
No, it doesn’t get murkier, it becomes increasingly ridiculous. In at least two years of monitoring the communications of Trump’s associates, his campaign staff and the transition team, not one shred of indictable information has leaked out - not one. The best the Lefties have is that Mike Flynn MAY have discussed sanctions with Amb. Kislyak.
The “Russian interference” story was and is a cover for the surveillance of Donald Trump and his associates and the media is going to cling to it until we pry it from their cold dead brains...
What they really ought to be pounding at every opportunity is the Russia/Clinton relationship!
I do not understand why every Republican is not pointing out the origins of the “Russian Hacking” every time this is brought up.
++++
I’ve been doing my part. I have posted many, many times here that the Russian connection to the Podesta emails is without any real proof. The claim of “high confidence” by some from the Intelligence Community based on a report by a Dem chosen organization does not equal proof.
Add that to the fact that Assange denies it was the Russians who were the source of the leak and the knowledge that Podesta’s email password was easily discovered and there is nothing left to the Russia Did It Theory.
And the claim of Trump-Russia collusion: Nada. Nothing. Zippo.
There is simply no THERE there. There never was.
(How’s that for constructing a paragraph with THERE used 3 times in a row?)
