Its highly, highly unlikely that Judge Neil Gorsuch will get 60 votes for confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told NBCs Meet the Press on Sunday. But over on Fox News Sunday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said it doesnt matter: Yes, we're going to confirm Judge Gorsuch this week, he told host Chris Wallace.
McConnell said he doesnt know if he can get eight Democrats to join 52 Republicans in confirming Gorsuch. There are Democrats who have not yet announced their position, he noted. (So far, only three Democrats have said they will vote to confirm Gorsuch.) [ ]
Look, what I'm telling you is that Judge Gorsuch is going to be confirmed. The way in which that occurs is in the hands of the Democratic minority. And I think during the course of the week, we'll find out exactly how this will end. But it will end with his confirmation.
McConnell pointed to the Clarence Thomas nomination, the most controversial Supreme Court nomination in history. He was confirmed for the Supreme Court 52-48. Just for your listeners to know, all it takes to get a filibuster in the Senate is for any one of the 100 senators to say you have to get 60 votes.

I think it’s safe to say that Mitch McConnell didn’t leave the Merrick Garland nomination in limbo for most of 2016 just so he could have some @sshole Senate minority leader from New York push him around in 2017.
I said yesterday that I’m sure Trump would be perfectly comfortable nominating an unemployed blue-collar worker with no legal credentials to fill that seat in a recess appointment. If you’re going to turn the U.S. Supreme Court into a joke, then at least put people there who can use the money and who deserve it a hell of a lot more than the @ssholes who have run our institutions into the ground.
As a conservative citizen it scares me to destroy a rule designed to slow things down in the Senate, but I can’t think of any judicial candidate who the Democrats would approve now, short of Ginsberg or that la raza lady. That leaves us with a series of bad choices.
1. Destroy the rule so SC nominees only need 50.
2. Keep the rule, allow Dems to win this round, then find a more liberal candidate to please them.
3. Keep the rule but keep throwing out more and more conservative nominees, knowing the Dems will continue to block. Make it a campaign theme. Then use it in 2018 elections to try to bring in some more GOP senators so the filibuster can be broken. I highly doubt the GOP could ride the rails of this journey and actually win the needed seats.
I’m to the point where I’m ready for fifth gear. The Dems have won every battle they’ve ever fought, from Social Security up through Obamacare. They’ve used lawfare and control of the judiciary to ruin everything good and decent about this country. Its to the point the President can’t execute directives explicitly given to him by the Constitution (immigration enforcement). Let’s just start nuking and try to repair some of the fundamental damage done to our country while we can. Otherwise, the long slow sweep of history will eventually bend to the will of the radical left.
I pretty much agree with you.
I hope that the Dems do invoke the Reid Rule. Gorsuchs IS going to get appointed, one way or another, we are gonna getcha getcha getcha; One way or another I'm going to win ya {oops sorry, breaking into a Blondie song here}.
Gorsuchs IS going to get appointed, one way or another. Everyone knows this. And if the Dems try to use the Reid Rule, we'll just ignore it, and that sets us up for all future Supreme Court appointees. They can't then say, "Well we didn't invoke the Reid Rule with Gorsuchs, but now we are invoking the Reid Rule. And you should keep with the Reid Rule tradition on this one."
So I hope the Dems do invoke the Reid Rule.
We should just pack it in and go home
Behind the scenes: Schumer will remove the filibuster on Gorsuch if Mitch (rhymes with...) agrees by handshake to not go nuclear on SCOTUS slot #2. Mitch is a beta male, and will agree.
That crazy bast*rd is out of control. He needs to be hospitalized for delusions of grandeur. He probably screams his own name or Linda’s during sex, bet his wife loves that.
McIsane will invariable screw this up and when he does McWeasal has to retaliate in some way as does the rest of the Republicans in the senate. They won’t but they should.
Good to hear!
He said he would be confirmed.
both in 1917, when the filibuster rule was established, and again in 1975, when it was modified to its current status, Democrats had the majority in the Senate. This was not necessarily to bring harmony.
The Democrats dominated congress for many years and had their will. Of course this was before the Dems became controlled by the Socialist wing of its party.
We saw Polosi and Reid’s brand of politics when she said to vote for the Obamacare bill before knowing what was in it, and his destruction of the cloture rule for Federal judges in order to stack the Federal Courts.
The Dems have always played dirty, especially since the Socialist wing has taken control. They wear masks and they manipulate.
Invoke the nuclear option. Then no politician can hide behind, “I supported the bill”, or “I opposed the bill”, in order the cover their backside when facing election. The masks tat Dems wear are beginning to slip. Hopefully the masks worn by liberal Republican will be ripped off for all to see.
If we only instituted TERM LIMITS fewer RATs would be concerned about losing party backing for their reelection. Then they could vote honestly.
I’m fine with getting rid of the filibuster at this point.
Make them all take an up-or-down vote for EVERYTHING.
Then let the chips fall where they may.
It will also make the voters more accountable at the polls (i.e. I can’t go pull the lever for some a-hole who supports my favorite issue, and count on Senate rules to slow him down on everything else)
You are harsh on the man sarge, but deservedly so!
