Years ago (late 70s, I think, maybe early 80s) I saw a movie called “Chac” which is the name of the Mayan rain god. The movie is about a village in the Yucatan peninsula which suffers from a drought. The villagers are in danger of starvation and don’t know what to do. Then they remember the old Mayan guy who lives in the forest. They think he can make it rain.
So they find the man, bring him to the village and ask him for rain. He says he needs things, so he starts making demands. They keep giving him whatever he asks for. It’s never enough. He always says “Something is missing”.
Finally, the villagers decide he is just a fraud, and in frustration, they kill him.
And as his blood soaks into the ground ... the rains come””

It’s truly fascinating reading. I’m learning a lot, and have only had it for a couple of hours.
In Cadiz, Spain there is a square called Plaza Topete but referred to as Plaza Fores (flowers). I was curious what Topple meant and did some research. Turns out is comes from a phoenician word for a temple where you took your first born child and sacrificed it to the gods. That square is where it was millennia ago. Superstitious ancient people did stupid and horrifying things,worldwide.
