President Trumps proposed border wall has been hotly debated as a political, economic and human rights issue ever since it emerged as a signature part of his campaign platform. But its also a major conservation issue, wildlife biologist Jeff Corwin argues.
The impact will be huge. It will be an environmental catastrophe, Corwin told CBS News on Wednesday.
Corwin, a nature conservationist known for his television work on the cable network Animal Planet, is concerned that the wall will dramatically disrupt what has been natures corridor through North and South America for millions of years now.
At least 89 endangered or threatened species would be impacted by the border wall, according to information from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
The wall would cut through huge swaths of national parks, wildlife refuges, and pristine estuaries, Corwin said. Animals along the border could see their migration routes blocked, access to important resources curtailed, and water supplies cut off.
The affected animals would include such rare species as the jaguar, Mexican gray wolf, mountain lion, and whitetail deer. All these animals are on the cusp of disappearance to different degrees: the Mexican gray wolf, for instance, is the most endangered subspecies of wolf in the world, according to Defenders of Wildlife.

“same story when we wanted to drill for oil in alaska.
The sky never fell and the catastrophe never happened.
Wild life thrived.
Same story when we were drilling for oil in the gulf.
The sky never fell and the catastrophe never happened.
Fish life thrived.”
Pretty much the same thing I was going to say.
Remember how Reagan got toasted for letting the Yellowstone fires burn during his term?
Seems that fire did what nature intended forest fires to do: renewed the habitat.
Five or six years after the fire the park people were gushing about the vitality of the park and the variety of wildlife.
They said the park hadn’t supported that variety of wildlife in decades.
I don’t think RR ever got credit for that.
Mountain lions are not endangered. Whitetail deer ate not endangered. And how is the Mexican Gray Wolf any different than other Gray Wolves? By that standard of what a “species” is, other races are different species of human.
Don’t forget the 3 legged, yellow-bellied, purple beaked farkle frog which is rumored to live in the area but can’t be found. The wall must be delayed until their existence is confirmed.
This is why there is no new Peace Bridge between Buffalo, NY and Canada - “ the birds will fly into it and die”
The wildlife will get used to it to survive.
oh please. It’s not as if there isn’t already fencing.
That what I thought... What? You mean, even Mexico’s wildlife is mooching off us?!!!
Yeah, two-legged wildlife.
This is so laughable. The MSM is doing everything to stop a wall from being built. God forbid if terrorists come across that border and launched an attack on us. We all know the MSM and the Dems would be the first to blame the president for not “safeguarding” the border. Hypocrisy never bothers these people. Anything to bring down this president is the only goal for these sorry people.
Like the illegal immigration routes with their trash and traffic don’t cause harm? PLEASE!
The affected animals would include such rare species as the jaguar, Mexican gray wolf, mountain lion, and whitetail deer.
The live on both sides of the border with the exception of the Jaguar which is a jungle cat.
The last time I looked the border between Mexico and the United States is a desert. The Jaguar of Mexico is many of hundreds of miles to the South. The author pulled that one out of his butt. Once the wall is built what would occur is two distinct breeding populations instead of one for the animals mentioned with the exception of the Jaguar.
road runners lol
-- Increased global warming (or cooling or climate change or whatever is currently en vogue)
-- Increased dangers from secondhand smoke
-- Increased exposure to heterosexual AIDS
-- and, most importantly, an increased need for safe spaces for the frightened-out-of-their-minds Left
But most of all -- the most serious, the most dreadful, the most horrendous outcome (to the Left) of building the Wall is that it will help President Trump's get re-elected in 2020.
Actually the pipeline increased the survival rate of the Caribou deer . In the winter they would huddle beneath it. They liked the fact it kept them warm.
Waitaminit!
Is this guy telling us that we’ve got animals doing the illegal border jumping thing too?!!
Will it never end?
Well, at least the fish don’t violate our national boundary at sea... do they?
You are correct. See my post #50
What about solar and wind farms? How many millions of birdies will they kill to save a few ppm of CO2?
In order for it to "cut through" national parks and wildlife refuges, that would mean that the parks and refuges would have to be located on both sides of the border, kind of like Glacier/Waterton Lakes National Park on the Canadian border.
There are no such shared parks or wildlife refuges on the U.S./Mexican border that I am aware of.
All U.S. national parks along the southern border end at the border. Nothing to cut through.
You can still see from the lack of vegetation where the horse and mining trails from 100 + years ago.
Pffff as if
