One-hundred years ago, my grandfather immigrated to the City of Chicago. He was just 13 years old. He had no money. He spoke no English. He knew no one, except for a third-cousin he had never met. He came to Chicago to escape anti-Semitism and the pogroms of Eastern Europe. He found a city where, if you work hard and play by the rules, you can succeed regardless of your faith or national origin.
My grandfather came to a city of opportunity, not a country that breaks up families at the border. He came to a land of liberty, not a place where federal agents stop people on the street to ask for their papers. He came to a country that has prospered with each new generation of entrepreneurs, innovators and dreamers of every faith and nationality who have sought the promise of a better life in America.
Whether our families traveled across the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Rio Grande or up the Mississippi to arrive in this city, we are all equally Chicagoans and Americans and we share a common destiny that is bigger and brighter than the petty and misguided views of bigots and racists.

I’m seeing a delayed reaction on their part. For all they or we know that situation could have played a role in Donald Trump’s miracle win in November. Could help the cause if both parties were on the same page, however past history doesn’t lead to any confidence that working with Democrats leads to anything more than total disbelief and mistrust in objectives that might be considered good for the country and the people.
One cannot process this chap's remarks without reference to that position in that Administration. Obama, remember, never missed an opportunity to aggravate tensions over incidents that had nothing to do with the Presidency.
Well put. You win the daily prize.
Chicago needs money bad. That’s the bottom line.
A century ago all four of my grandparents came to
Illinois from Eastern Europe. They came legally. We found their immigration records showing the ships on which they arrived. My paternal grandfather went to work in east central Illinois where my father was born. Eventually, they moved to Chicago where my father met my mother. When
my grandmother died we found, among her possessions, the book she had used to study English.
Where you succeeded by following the rules????? He is kidding, right? That’s not how you EVER succeeded in Chicago. My man comes from Chicago (I forgave him) and he says his grandfather said that they only way to get a job was to vote Dem.
Interestingly, unless Rahm Emanuel (Auerbach was the family name before it was changed) is bending the truth again, his history seems quite sketchy. His grandfather emigrated while the USA was gearing up for entry into the Great War. It seems somewhat bizarre to suggest that anti-Semitic pogroms were taking place while all of Europe was engaged in military combat.
Another omission: Emanuel’s grandfather’s occupation was described as a union organizer elsewhere. Rahm makes him out to be a working stiff.
The lying scumbag author completely ignores the very strict rules enforced at the points of entry. That’s important ... and he ignores it. Why should I believe anything else he writes?
No kidding. The city is billions in debt with unfunded pension promises as far as the eye can see. Is it any wonder that productive, taxpaying Chicagoans are fleeing? I’ve loved living here (as a renter) for nearly a quarter century, but I’ll be damned if I’ll grow old here. I plan to move out within the next year or two and buy a home in some sane area of the country.
Thanks, I figured he wasn’t telling the story straight up, because Rahm’s one of those people who would rather lie when the truth would serve them better.
I take all politicians’ folksy stories with a grain of salt no matter who they are. They all have a spiel.
O/T-I hate hate hate auto-correct! I can spell better on my own, I used to be the spelling bee queen! AC is popping up words with no relation to what I’m trying to type!
My head is just whirling from looking at the ugly pictures of Rahm Emanuel. Something must be done so we’re no longer exposed to his ugliness. I fear for our children.
What an idiot! You lead of with playing by the rules and move directly from there to violating the laws of the Nation and offering protection to those that break the law! You are a special kind of stupid!
It is a stretch for such a loud and obnoxious public figure to complain about experiencing bigotry when the reality is that people are turned off by his profane language and rude behavior.
Emanuel provoked the first public school teachers strike in almost twenty-five years because he enjoyed swearing at the head of the teachers’ union.
Your grandfather would probably beat the crap out of you for being a Marxist POS.
“Speak out against the hatred and ugliness” et cetera.
Well, we TRIED, yer anal sphincterness, but it didn’t work and you kept on trying to beat us up for doing so.
So now we’re going to have to escalate to your level.
