Syria threatens to use SCUD missiles on Israel if it carries out any more airstrikes
UK Daily Mail ^ | March 27, 2017 | Staff

Russia has warned the Israel government on behalf of Assad regime that any more air strikes in Syria will be met with Scud missiles.

Syria had sent Israel a message via Russia that Scud missiles would be fired towards Israeli targets if Israel carried out any further airstrikes in the war-torn region, Lebanon's Al-Diyar newspaper reported.

According to the report, any strikes against Syrian military targets will be met with Scuds launched at IDF bases while any strikes against civilian infrastructure will be met with missiles fired at Haifa's port and petrochemical plant.

Assad may be counting on help from some of the big dogs, like Russia or Iran. I’d say he’s in rough shape to be a proxy warrior for Iran, though.

heh heh

Russia can get what it wants in Syria by dealing with Israelis if Assad is that dumb. There are reasons Israeli government officials have been visiting Russia in recent months. And it’s been known for several years that Israel and Russia were cooperating on Syria.

Israel did not attack Assad but Hezbollah. Iran and Hezbollah are a greater strategic threat than ISIS at the moment.

Syria is patron to Hezbollah, a credible threat to Israel’s security. So Israel thinks that a collapsed Syria is better than an intact Syria.

Personally, I think they’re wrong. If they think Syria under Assad was bad, wait until they share a border with ISIS.

Last week the Syrians fired a large (SCUD?) SSM towards Israel and the Israelis had to down it with the (up until now) not battlefield tested Arrow system. The Arrow knocked the missile away from Israel and the rocket landed in neighboring Jordan. This is a first and probably only the beginning of a war...

Unless they are ISIS - sadly
ISIS has sure left israel alone compared to other countries and more distant targets

If they think they are gonna bomb Iran out of SYRIA they need to put down the water pipes

I’m think israel bombing Hezbollah in SYRIA is the greatest strategic threat right now unless they are cooperating with assad and the Russians

Iran has many decades of strategic interest in Syria and these need to be accommodated albeit not by permitting a terrorist network to operate in Syria

If I were Syria.I would not launch any missiles toward Israel. Why would you want to provoke your enemy? Its really stupid to me.

If Syria does fire Scuds at Israel they will really experience what real air power can do.

Israel has tested their anti-ballistic missile systems under realistic and very real circumstances. They've also seen the upgraded Patriot batteries used to knock down Scuds in southern Saudi Arabia and Yemen. I'll bet Israel feels pretty secure behind their ABM shield.

Syria has to consider what poking at that particular bee hive would cause. Not only would Israel knock down their missiles, it would give Israel the excuse it needed to start flying regular patrols inside Syria. They'd start doing "Scud hunts" like we did in the gulf war. The Syrians couldn't stop them, if they tried, the Israelis would take out their SAM sites and shoot down any Syrian air that came at them. They've pretty well already demonstrated their ability to do both with impunity. So basically the Syrian threat can only lead to losing control of a good chunk of their airspace. If the Syrians are any kind of objective about this, they realize this too. So the Scud threat is probably just hot air.

No, not at all.

Terrorism from the PLO, ISIS, etc. is a thorn in their side, just like it is for us. It is extremely painful for them as for us, but it is not an existential threat.

A united Syria, OTOH, allied with the likes of Hezbollah (i.e. Iran) and a (once again) radicalized Egypt WOULD be an existential threat. No united Syria, and that threat cannot materialize. Israel has not forgotten that it almost ceased to exist in 1973 - and they basically had to threaten to nuke every Arab country and the Saudi oil fields to get what they needed to win. They lost the equivalent number of dead as 3 Vietnams in the 3 weeks of that war.

Their actions, while not consistent with exactly what we want, are very understandable - which is why you don’t see us making a big deal about it.

Israel has better security. Their borders are constantly under threat, so they are more secure. ISIS would have a hard time infiltrating attackers.

I’m having a hard time locating *any* reference to Israel having a conventional offensive surface missile. That is, non-nuclear, comparable to a SCUD or larger missile, that can be fired from Israel, not one of their submarines.

They do have conventional Submarine Launched Cruise Missiles.

So probably their fastest and best short term solution would be to have a few heavy bombers, capable of dropping Small Diameter Bombs. They are 250lb precision-guided glide bombs that can be dropped at high altitude to glide over 100km to their target, so the plane is out of range of SAMs.

A B-52 can carry over 110 SDBs, for example, so a single flight could really pound the Syrian military to ribbons.
