As the hearings went on, I felt a slight bit of trepidation rising. He gave some signs of being a little 'too good to be true'.

I want my judges to be good, but not goody two-shoes...and bad-ass when they have to be.

He’s made some horrible statements on decisions implying illegal immigrants have constitutional rights to stay in the country.

Because of the demeanor that you mention, one liberal columnist compared him to Eddie Haskell, i.e., an insincere flatterer. But if he were combative like Robert Bork, they'd criticize him for that as well, saying he was "temperamentally unsuited" for the job. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
