Failure on health bill also hurts prospects for tax overhaul

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans' failure to repeal Barack Obama's health care law deals a serious blow to another big part of President Donald Trump's agenda: tax reform.

Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., say they will soon turn their attention to the first major re-write of the tax code in more than 30 years. But they will have to do it without the momentum of victory on health care.

Just as important, the loss on health care will deprive Republicans of $1 trillion in tax cuts.

The GOP health plan would have repealed nearly $1 trillion in taxes enacted under Obama's Affordable Care Act. The bill coupled the tax cuts with spending cuts for Medicaid, so it wouldn't add to the budget deficit.

Without the spending cuts, it will be much harder for Republicans to cut taxes without adding to the federal government's red ink.

"Yes this does make tax reform more difficult," said Ryan. "But it does not in any way make it impossible."

"That just means the Obamacare taxes stay with Obamacare. We're going to go fix the rest of the tax code," he added.

House Republicans couldn't round up enough votes Friday to repeal and replace a law they despise, raising questions about their ability to tackle other tough issues.

"Doing big things is hard," Ryan conceded as he vowed to press on.

Rep. Jodey Arrington, R-Texas, acknowledged that Friday's turn of events made him doubtful about the Republicans' ability to tackle major legislation.

"This was my first big vote and our first big initiative in the line of things to come like tax reform," said the freshman. "I think this would have given us tremendous momentum and I think this hurts that momentum."

Pride goes before the fall.

Congratulations to all you Never Trumpers for your no vote and letting unconstitutional mandates and abortion funding stand.

"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean.

Thankfully there is a reason for Trump being elected that is beyond what we do.

No reason at all not to cut taxes significant without the Obamacare (”Obamacare”) fix.

That is phony government stalling as long as they can.

20 idiots of the “Freedom” Caucus have severly hurt the Trump momentum, the Trump rally, and the ability of the Republicans to now get anything done. I don’t give a rat about Rand Paul’s pathetic vainglory and career, and the delusional Ted Cruz 2020 Republicans can all go to hell. They, along with their Democratic Party allies, have once again stigmatized the Republican Congress as the Do Nothing Republicans. The August tax cuts are now facing a much more difficult chance of success, if we don’t get the August tax cuts the DOW will tank and the Dems and the MSM will blame Trump. The 20 idiots have greatly strengthened the hand of the Democrats who were going to be in huge trouble if the markets continued their Trump rally, now the “Freedom” Caucus - the 20 idiots - probably have doomed this rally. Pray Trump can overcome these back stabbers and get the tax cuts in despite these nosebleeding idiots of vainglory.

What this means right now thanks to the vainglory of RandPAC and some Pharma interests who wanted Obamacare to stay and gave big money to Meadows hoping to get the No vote, the Obamacare taxes stay with Obamacare. So now the only thing that can be fixed is the rest of the tax code.

Trump agreed to Paul’s request to pull the bill - thank God, it was the best thing to do under the circumstances. Now Republicans will try to move on to the tax cuts, but remember we will have that Democrat operative Yellen in the Fed taking snips at the Trump rally by raising the interest rate too much, too fast, to try and sabotage any rally. Now that the rally has been hurt by the “Freedom” Caucus, she may come out with even a more devastating hike to really pull down the markets, much less the millions of Americans in credit card debt who will get snail mail that their interest rate on their 9.99% credit card is going to 14.99% or more - happy days soon coming for them (not).

I think Trump is the best leader, he may be able to pull off the tax cuts yet, even with the nosebleeding 20 idiots who are out to get him for their own vanity. If we don’t get the tax cuts by August, the markets will collapse, the Dems and MSM will blame Trump, but I will not be alone blaming Rand Paul, the Ted Cruz Republican cult, and the Democrats.

It does hurt the tax overhaul.......provided that the rino leadership tries to ram-rod another POS legislation without consensus from the base. (like what they did with this RyanCare bill)

But a 100% free market health care bill will pass out of this house I tell you. The Freedom Caucus might only have twenty members but they each get to vote to times!!!

If it was a POS bill why did Trump call it a good bill?

Watch the video in post 8.

Exactly

I’m beginning to think that this little group of Freedom Caucus and conservative bashers are paid shills for the GOPe and fellow travelers. I see post after post in favor of Ryanocare. Meanwhile, everything I have read from FR leadership is in support of what the Freedom Caucus did.

Ok. I’m the only one it seems that sees this as something Trump wanted. He blamed the democrats. He was gracious to the republicans. He ran as a republican. Of course he’s not going to be ugly like Ryan and come out and say he doesn’t like Ryan the way Ryan has about him. He is the president he doesnt need to. But that doesn’t mean Ryan is not working against him. Trump may have looked st the bill and said aw geeze this is worse crap than I dreamed it would be.

This way when prices of Obamacare go wild this year as planned by the petulant prince obama himself at least trump won’t get every bit of the blame which would have happened no matter what

I just listened to Vice President Pence speak to a roaring crowd in West Virginia. He graciously, but squarely, laid the blame for failing to repeal and replace Obamacare on the unanimous Democrats and a small group of Republicans. Do not be deceived. FR was a hotbed of NeverTrumpism during the primaries.

The “Freedom” (Status Quo) Caucus has pulled off a good one here.

They rightly killed Ryan’s bill. This was the equivalent of throwing an intentional walk. For this they are lauded as heroes who have saved the world. With three R defectors the Democrats could have done the same thing.

The question is, when do they go to the plate and hit a homer or even a single? They’ve had over 4 months to think about this. What is their plan? I’ve heard nothing from them but could have missed it.

Surely someone will fill me in on where to read about the Freedom Caucus plan to repeal O-care, build the wall, and cut taxes.

At least we know why they approved of the KL pipeline. We need the extra gas and oil for all the “immigrants” joining us daily.

I’m thinking the Dems just missed an opportunity to preserve most of Obamacare by not voting for this monstrosity.

This will go on for the next 4 years. The GOPe will continue serving up crap sandwiches to sabotage Trump and conservatives, and then try to pin their failures on us. Let’s not forget Ryan is doing exactly as his predecessor did. Ryan has more in common with D’s than R’s, it appears.

Our only options are to light up the switchboards and vote out R’s and D’s who do not support the Constitution
