A federal judge on Tuesday found four men guilty of trespassing and other misdemeanor charges for their roles in the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge last winter.
U.S. District Judge Anna J. Brown issued her rulings in court against Jason Patrick, Duane Ehmer, Darryl Thorn and Jake Ryan--the final four defendants in the Malheur case to go on trial.
Shortly afterward, Patrick was taken into custody by deputy U.S. marshals after the judge ordered that he be placed on electronic monitoring as he awaited sentencing.
Patrick, described by prosecutors as an organizer of last winter's occupation, chose to go to jail instead. He stood, removed his blue blazer, took off his belt, emptied his pockets, placed his pack of cigarettes on the defense table and was handcuffed. He turned to his mother in the courtroom gallery and said, "I love you," before he was led out.
A jury returned verdicts against the four on separate felony charges on March 10, finding each guilty of at least one felony.....
Each misdemeanor charge could bring up to six months in prison.
Patrick and Ehmer were present in court Tuesday. Ryan and Thorn waived their appearances, but Thorn listened to the proceeding by phone.
Sentencings are tentatively for May 10. Further hearings will be set on government forfeiture and restitution claims.
Andrew Kohlmetz, Patrick's lawyer, said he expected the misdemeanor convictions.
"Nobody harbored any illusions about what was going to happen," Kohlmetz said. "We always expected they would be found guilty."
But he called the misdemeanor counts "throw-away charges in case the others didn't stick."........

The judge will be sentencing the convicted defendants and deciding on restitution later with a tentative sentencing date of May 10th in the case.
Much disappointment and disgust from supporters of the protestors convicted in the second trial of both felony and misdemeanor charges.
Gavin Seim posting a video late last night speaking of the need to take a stand non-violently in the wake of the second Oregon trial and in the face of Judge Gloria Navarro's heavy-handed tactics in the first Bunkerville Standoff trial in Las Vegas where supporters of the defendants are having their copies of the Constitution confiscated at the courthouse door.
Seim speaks of the USA as now being a 'third world country'. Peter Hitchens "Mail on Sunday" column the other day says the UK is almost a 'banana republic'. Dire statements indeed.
One thing that deserves to happen right now is for President Trump to release Dwight and Steven Hammond from prison.
Their five year prison sentence 'for burning grass' as activist John Lamb posted the other day is wrong. Its a terrorism sentence under federal law because they lit a backfire to protect their land from a brushfire.
The Hammonds were the reason for the Oregon Standoff protest-release the Hammonds now Mr. President.
We deserve so much better from Washington DC than this nonsensical phony debate that masks business as usual on matters like ‘health care’.
Business needs to be taken care of and by that I mean the big corporations and big banks.
So Obamacare can get a new label on it and new sugar coating, but its still the same ‘excrement sandwich’ inside.
Heck, I heard on John Batchelor’s radio show the other day that Ezekiel Emmanuel, the much maligned architect of Obamacare is back in town for the “fix”.
The “Banana Republicans” don’t care about the Hammonds sitting in jail serving a mandatory five-year ‘terrorism sentence’ for lighting a backfire.
Donald Trump needs to send the corrupt judiciary a message by bringing some justice to all this starting with release of the Hammonds from jail now........
Would like to know if Pres. Trump is aware of the Hammond issue.
You heard right EM and President Trump are putting their heads together to come up with the best way to continue screwing the American people.
I would hope he would free these patriots but I have my doubts whether they are a blip on his New Yawk radar
Screw the 6th amendment... they get no jury. A judge will do it all. Why would anyone want a jury of their peers?
Why did they request a bench trial?
I pray that he is.
My AZ State Senator Sylvia Allen held a meeting with Mrs. Finicum, two of her daughters her attorney and several others regarding the abuse of the Federal Authorities. She has some BIG connections so hopefully the information she is putting together will get to President Trump.

“Shortly afterward, Patrick was taken into custody by deputy U.S. marshals after the judge ordered that he be placed on electronic monitoring as he awaited sentencing.”
No fine? It’s a damn misdemeanor charge!! This is a railroad job. Is his legs in shackles?
This was a rigged process with the judge deciding the bench trial for midemeanors instead of a jury one against the desire of the defendants and their lawyers.
Judge Anna Brown shoved a bench trial down their throats.
She was hell bent on ‘getting them on something’.
In all fairness the ‘conservative movement’ that hated Mr. Trump so much and promoted Ted Cruz was turning a deaf ear and has been pretty consistent in that as well.
I voted for Trump in part because of that.
I honestly don’t have a lot of faith in the politicians.
They are good at exploiting tragedy, emotions etc. but won’t act until they are forced.
Dr. Martin Luther King and others had to pay a price to force racial laws to change some 50 plus year ago.
The pivotal even on race is May 2, 1963 in Birmingham, AL when six and seven year old children by the hundreds marched into the police lines shocking Bull Connor’s (their boss) officers so much the adults got around the lines and moved into downtown Birmingham.
Connor was so enraged he used water cannon and dogs the next day on teenagers who protested creating visual images that were seen around the world.
The rigging of the second trial in Oregon after Marcus Mumford’s vigorous defense and successful work in the first is a sort of “Bull Connor” thing in and of itself replicating what happened in 1963 in its own way.
Politicians need to act, take action, get in the way of business as usual, free prisoners, get people out of jail.
Stop making emotional sympathetic speeches and act......
