OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) — A huge fire at an apartment building under construction in suburban Kansas City has sparked fires at several homes blocks away. The eight-alarm fire broke out about 3:30 p.m. Monday at the multimillion-dollar CityPlace development in Overland Park, Kansas, sending plumes of smoke and embers toward homes in the suburban neighborhood nearby, The Kansas City Star reported (http://bit.ly/2nLM3Hg ). Once one roof caught fire, embers jumped from roof to roof, spreading the blaze, said Overland Park Fire Department spokesman Jason Rhodes. "It's a bit of a war zone down there frankly," Rhodes said. No serious injuries were reported, although one firefighter suffered a minor injury, he said.

Embers from the original fire damaged or destroyed 17 nearby homes.

And how many of those had cedar shake roofs?

I was thinking the same thing. Propane heaters and welding equipment.

There were certainly no heaters in operation today...

The point being made was NOT that the heaters were in operation, but that the propane tanks were there because it HAD BEEN very cold (19 degrees) just a few days ago.

There were two explosions, and it is very likely it was propane tanks in the building. It also could have been cleaning chemicals (like acetone). The first explosion was small (could have been the acetone), the second was much larger (likely the propane tanks).

I was thinking water heaters

The building where the original fire started was the least completed one and I doubt there were any water heaters installed yet. Considering there were no windows in any of the structures, it seems illogical to even think there was any water service or gas service hooked up and 'active' anywhere in those buildings. Water lines would have frozen a few days back when it was 19 degrees.

Wow, small world. When I was a kid, we lived at the corner of 98th Street and Foster, I went to Brookridge Elementary school. I was within walking distance, ah yes, those were the days.

It looks like the final tally was 22 homes damaged in addition to the apartment complexes. That was crazy!! It’s all the wood shingles in those nice neighborhoods. They look pretty but should not be used anymore. That is going to be one big mess to straighten out.

The fire in Raleigh also came really close to destroying the Edenton Methodist Church, which is over 200 years old.

Check for ELFs. They love to arson new construction.

That's what I'm thinking - that or insurance fraud. We had a couple of big ones in the Phoenix area last year, too.

OMG! I went there when it was a new school, a model for elementary schools. I have such fond memories of that area. I loved the midwest.

At some point in the future people will be aghast to learn that in the 21st century we were still using the same material the logs in their fireplace are made out of to make large-scale residential dwellings when concrete and steel had long since become readily available.
