South Sudan is not a Muslim nation. It's about 60% Christian, 33% are followers of African Traditional Religion which is sometimes mixed with Christian tradition and about 6% Muslim.
The reason there is a South Sudan is the Muslim dominated north was trying to subjugate all the Southerners with their radical Islamic beliefs. It was a long nasty war that resulted in the partitioning of Sudan. As a result of the war South Sudan was devastated and they are still trying to rebuild.
