At a news conference Thursday, Mick Mulvaney, President Trumps budget chief, defended proposed cuts to the Meals on Wheels program, which provides food aid to needy senior citizens, by saying the program is one of many that is just not showing any results.
Meals on Wheels is a nonprofit group that receives funding from the federal government, state and local governments and private donors. We serve more than 2.4 million seniors from 60 to 100+ years old each year, the organization writes. They are primarily older than 60 and because of physical limitations or financial reasons, have difficulty shopping for or preparing meals for themselves.

Off & on, l’ve volunteered to deliver Meals on Wheels meals for a number of years. And I’ve known many of my friends who have done the same. As far as I know all the deliveries have been done by volunteers. I’ve also included the organization among my family’s charitable donations. I had no idea that they received any federal government funds.
Only 3% of their budget comes from the feds
Not showing results? My G*d- tell me this is satire. Are they deliberately trying to piss people off?
This program helps the weak! and elderly;it’s worth every penny.
My parents received meals on wheels for awhile and it really helped them when neither of them could shop or cook. I didn’t know it was partially federally funded. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it doesn’t show any results, I mean, you feed people and the next day they’re hungry again. Maybe the funds given weren’t spent on the promises made.
What results were they expecting? Fat seniors?
My parents do not qualify for it as they are too well off according to the criteria. My parents are not rich by any stretch. Where we live there are NO services we can use.
Was good for my grandparents, though.
Not sure this is true, sounds like a scare tactic.
I also have delivered through Kiwanis
I bet someone is getting $$$$ that should have gone for meals.
This program is a COMMUNITY program run by volunteers. If the Feds give anything, it’s very little. If people got to keep their money we would be able to take care of our own.
I think it’s a good and needed program for seniors, and |I also think it would continue to be funded through local donations, churches, volunteers and in-kind gifts, and resources such as the community ag programs and coops that already provide much of the food that is distributed thourgh food pantries at the lowest possible cost. Adding the federal gov’t in to the mix only decreases cost-efficiency and adds bureaucratic red-tape.
Most likely.
The Federal Government doesn’t administer the “meals on wheels” programs. It’s a State program, and if the State wants to use their share of annual block grant of Federal funding (I can’t recall the title of the block grant right this minute...getting old is for the birds.) for that activity it’s up to them, not up to the Fed.
We serve more than 2.4 million seniors from 60 to 100+ years old each year,
So, is that 2.4 million separate people, or 2.4 million divided by 365 days?
I heard the Press Secretary say at the Press Conference today that the Federal Government DOES NOT fund Meals on Wheels. The Federal Government gives money to the States and then the States CHOOSE what to do with that money.
cut the federal money. it’s not the feds job to feed anyone in the USA, citizen or illegal.
Has anyone made the connection between killing inconvenient unborn babies and killing inconvenient seniors? Why do social justice warriors want federal funds to kill a person because he requires more care than his family wishes to give at this time, only if said inconvenient helpless person has his whole life before him? Why, when the inconvenient, helpless person is at the end of his life, does the SJW not want the fedgov to pay for killing him?
I know, horrible, ghastly thought, but just help me understand the logic of the liberal. Killing grandpa- he only has 10 years at best, most of them ill and helpless in bed. Killing junior - he only has one or two helpless years, and then he begins to contribute to the family for decades. Just trying to understand.
Meals on Wheels is a great organization. I didn’t know it got any federal funding. My MIL used it. Recipients pay some of the cost. I can’t remember the exact amount, but I think my MIL paid about $6/day for lunch and dinner, Mon-Sat. The meals were delivered by volunteers (lunch and dinner were delivered at the same time). I’m sure the amount charged didn’t cover all the costs. Besides bringing the meals, the volunteers will notify a friend/family contact person if something seems amiss.
Perhaps. But this shows why it is not possible to cut the budget. Every program, every agency has its fans and the fans squawk so loud their congressman and Senators vote against the cuts to their favorite program. Thanks for making it possible to not cut anything in the federal budget.
Agree, an excellent program.
