Secretary of Defense James Mattis has asserted that climate change is real, and a threat to American interests abroad and the Pentagons assets everywhere, a position that appears at odds with the views of the president who appointed him and many in the administration in which he serves.
In unpublished written testimony provided to the Senate Armed Services Committee after his confirmation hearing in January, Mattis said it was incumbent on the U.S. military to consider how changes like open-water routes in the thawing Arctic and drought in global trouble spots can pose challenges for troops and defense planners. He also stressed this is a real-time issue, not some distant what-if.
Climate change is impacting stability in areas of the world where our troops are operating today, Mattis said in written answers to questions posed after the public hearing by Democratic members of the committee. It is appropriate for the Combatant Commands to incorporate drivers of instability that impact the security environment in their areas into their planning.

Maybe the President is going to weed out all of those who agree with the Secretary. Still draining the swamp.

Somebody hit the "Climate Hoax Media Flood" button.
Classic oxymoron : “military intelligence”.
Climate changes but the change isn't caused by humans. Human causation is the liberal hoax. Anyone who's studied climate over the eons knows that change is constant. The current climate is definitely changing, especially in the northern hemisphere. There's nothing we can do to stop it so we have to adapt. And that's what I think Mattis is saying: we have to be militarily adaptable to new conditions. When I hear him calling for carbon taxes I'll change my mind but for now I agree with him.
He truly is a mad dog. Put him to sleep,.
I think some context is needed. Climate change is real. Warming melted the glaciers over the upper Midwest.
Mattis thinks climate change is real and Islamic terror is fake. What an utter disaster at SecDef.
He also hates Israel.
No kidding. People are getting too touchy.
Except there has been none for the last 18 years.
Be very careful to distinguish between specific statements and generalizations.
Only the former can really tell you what a person believes about a particular controversy.
So what? Not what he was talking about.
The only constant thing about climate is that it changes. Perhaps our military should have scenarios to deal with it.
I read the excerpt: I did not see “man-made” in it.
He has no idea what he is talking about.
>>Mattis wasnt referring to AGW.<<

This is my hope.
Russia has a huge lead in nuclear powered icebreakers, and I believe it is true the USA does not even have any under construction.
This cedes an ocean to the Ruskies, and one that may have significant oil. NOT GOOD.
Incidentally, nuclear power means, in this case, FAR MORE EFFECTIVE—because capable of generating much more power.
I remember when Sarah Palin got based by conservatives for pushing a study in Alaska to categorize and review the risks due to climate change. Of course in the actual plan it was to take into account warming AND cooling, and what changes might occur to infrastructure, coastal fishing, agriculture, etc.
Hmm - this would fit his quote on “Be polite,..... and HAVE A PLAN to kill everyone you meet.”
True.
What about over the last 4.5 billion years?
Hard to war game around that kind of timeline.
Agreed. If he ACTS to spend money on nonsense, I’ll want his head.
Until then, he said the right thing, which if read several times, wasn’t much :)

Thanks for your thoughtful and reasoned post which I reposted above.
Out of the first 30 or so posts on this thread at least 25 called for Trump to dump the traitor Mattis or some variation on that theme. Those posts are tiresome and not worth reading.
