I think Dobbs is being a little harsh here.

You're looking at Republicans and Democrats as if we all have the same standards, but we don't. The big difference between Republican and Democrat voters is that Republicans have principles that will guide the way they vote -- or even not vote at all. Most Democrats have no such principles -- which is why you had radical feminists among Bill Clinton's strongest supporters, and why the Democrats could run a KKK leader and he would still get north of 85% of the black vote.

When Paul Ryan made the comments that were the subject of Dobbs' rant, he was in a position where he had two primary responsibilities: (1) win his own race, and (2) protect the GOP majority in the House. If he perceived that a loose cannon like Trump at the top of the ticket was a threat to Item (2), then he was completely justified in distancing himself from Trump.

It's also kind of ridiculous for anyone to expect Ryan to maintain any loyalty to Trump back in October 2016. Trump did, after all, go out of his way to promote the guy who had challenged Ryan unsuccessfully in the Republican primary in that House district.

Looks like he perceived wrong then and I’m betting he can’t perceive his own future now.

didn’t Trump end up supporting Ryan’s re-election, or was that as Ryan remaining House Speaker?

I sure don't remember it that way. A lot of us here at FR were hoping Trump would come out and support Paul Nehlen, but he never did.
