Based on the elaborate process, the best way of thinking about this is that “Obamacare is a dead pig”, the process is “the meat grinder”, and the end result will be sausage.

If, after we get the sausage, it is acceptable sausage, we should not overly contemplate the process used to make it. Just congratulate those pig-blood and offal covered congressmen who did the hard part of the job.

Plus, at least some grace to whoever has to clean up the mess, as well as cook the sausage. This means the 12 budget committees that must purge the remnants of Obamacare from their budgets, and those that must shepherd it through the inevitable court challenges.

Actually, it’s former Congressman Tom Price’s bill almost completely. And now Trump has put Price in charge of HHS, thereby implicitly endorsing his work especially since he’s supporting the advancement of his bill. So Pricecare, or Trumpcare. All Ryan is doing is supporting the work put forth by his President and the HHS director as a good Speaker would be expected to do.

But people in here detest Ryan, and the bill isn’t a straight repeal, so Ryancare it is.

I was offered COBRA, $1693 per month.
A penalty is a penalty whether it is the IRS or the insurance company that collects it.

>>>If you were to lose a job and the insurance with it and it took 3 months to find another, you will pay 30% more in premium for one year, substantially more than you would have owed the IRS.<<<

That is a misnomer. It is what COBRA is today, but you have 63 Days to find a new Job and attain new or continuing Health Insurance Benefits.

Currently, if you lose your Job you IMMEDIATELY have to purchase Insurance at the COBRA Rates which are substantially more.

In our case, we were paying about $400 a Month Pretax. When I left my Job I switched to COBRA the next Month to maintain Coverage and our Insurance cost more than doubled.

The increase was due to the fact that we were now paying for the portion of the Premium that my previous Employer paid as part of my Compensation.

When Obamacare got involved, our Premiums rose far above the COBRA Rate and we are currently paying $2,000 a Month.

I am not professing full knowledge of this proposal. I listened to Ryan explain it when questioned and he reminded Hannity (I believe) that we already have this with COBRA.

I watched Spicer’s press briefings last week - it seems that a “straight repeal” is not workable. That is why the HC negotiations is using this framework; https://www.whitehouse.gov/repeal-and-replace

Maybe you’re right, but I doubt it. I understood the 30% penalty to apply to policies purchased by individuals who’ve let their insurance lapse, or who’ve chosen to go uninsured voluntarily and change their mind later.

I don’t think it applies to employer group policies, but I’d be willing to be proven wrong if you have a link to support your position.

Thanks for a nice thoughtful comment! It looks like you must have some actual negotiations experience.

The sad part of it is you are still stuck playing Charlie Brown. “If I follow all the arcane rules Lucy won’t snatch the football.” We need to color outside the lines.

>>I was offered COBRA, $1693 per month.<<

Cobra is insanely expensive because the only people who take it are sick already. Under Cobra, if you don’t take it initially and get sick in the next six months you can back-pay the premiums and get the initial coverage (as I understood it a few years ago, at least). So people between jobs don’t take it unless, like i said, they’re already sick.

Insurance companies have no choice but to price Cobra policies expensively because they know they’re taking on a pool of unhealthy applicants, and under the law they’re forced to do so, but can set the price. Hence, your extremely high premium quote.

I don’t want to be rude but who are you or the Gov’t to decide there should get to be a penalty for going without insurance for 3 months? Let the marketplace decide.

I am asking if you will admit that we got sandbagged if we get this basic bill as law?

Don’t make it about me.

“We need to color outside the lines.”

Obviously Trump thinks outside the box. That’s the negotiations part Trump is talking about. The part where you can’t waltz in and say your own position is a turd and stupid stuff like that.

No...the penalties are TOTALLY different.

You are getting insurance for $1693 a month.

The government penalty gives you nothing..."0" insurance..."0" Benefit...

“You don’t negotiate by declaring the starting point DOA.”

Well, is socialized medicine DOA or not? Are you willing to accept socialized medicine as the new normal?

Trump has been very specific on who “we will make the government” pay for. If you read the comments you quoted in the proper context you will see he’s talking about a small amount of people who truly cannot afford HC. The rest of us pay for them anyway, in various ways. Trump said “we will not let people die in the streets without HC”. Those are the ones he’s specifically referring to.
