On the south side of Chicago, in one of the city's most dangerous neighborhoods, brazen criminals occasionally hit the gangsters jackpot: they loot freight containers carrying shiny, new guns.
The guns boxes and boxes of them are part of shipments that are destined for gun companies or gun shops across the country. But as gangsters have caught on to the practice, they are ransacking these trains and stealing weapons that eventually make their way to the citys blood-soaked streets.
"Any time you have individuals who can go in and steal guns from a train, that makes the environment very toxic," said Pastor Cory Brooks, who leads a church around the corner from the freight yard.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said that since 2013, more than 150 firearms have been reported stolen from freight trains. An Associated Press investigation revealed that some were traced to violent crimes and only 16 were recovered.
In a city already reeling from one of the most violent crime waves in years, where tens of thousands of firearms are recovered from the streets every year, 150 stolen guns might not seem like a big deal. But one single gun can be linked to at least 14 fatal shootings, according to the ATF.

...It’s the Odungo way....
Material for a Sequel?
I wonder if the gang leaders are tipped off about which containers carry guns. Also, the shippers may want to keep those containers in a more secure warehouse and not in a railroad yard.
After the first train was robbed, somebody should have gotten a clue.
Slow learners.
The One long term fix would take a generation.
Stop the lies about single motherhood, racism, McDonald’s or drug dealing, reparations.
Get men to start acting responsible.
Get rid of welfare and SNAP and free housing.
Change the outlook of a generation.
“150 stolen guns might not seem like a big deal.”
No, it’s not. The headline had me thinking it was at least thousands.
“But one single gun can be linked to at least 14 fatal shootings, according to the ATF.”
What is that supposed to mean? If that gun hadn’t been stolen, those people would still be alive? How does that follow, in a city where the police confiscate 10,000 firearms a year?
Hussein is arming the shadow government.
TERRORISTS!!! DRONE THEM!!!
From 3/9.
What is their definition of “full of guns?”
150 guns does does not make a freight car “full.”
1500 guns would be arguable as a “a large shipment in a freight car.”
15,000 guns would be “A freight car FULL OF GUNS.”
150 guns?!?! That’s barely a pallet.
Thank God we don’t have to worry about Law Abiding Citizens carrying guns too.
And they just can't wait until driverless vehicles start transporting guns and other goodies.
Obama was on to us Hoosiers.
He caught us packing up vans with guns from gunshows where there are no background checks and sending them to Chicago to kill aspiring rappers.
We just had to find another way to get them into the hands of poor, oppressed gang-bangers.
BWahahaha
Oh, and that was 150 from 2013 to now.
So not even 150 in one shipment lost. That’s multiple thefts.
So seriously. This is an issue? How many guns have been stolen from pawn shops and gun stores in Chicago from 2013 to now?
I've started the sequel; I'm about 10,000 words in. The bad guys and the weapons are higher caliber.
Something hinkey about this whole story.
more than 150 stolen guns since 2013 ?
MSM likes round numbers so let’s say 155.
that’s what, 39 a year for 4 years ?
except 100 of which were Ruger handguns ?
so that leaves what 55ish guns stolen since 2013 ?
Boxes and boxes of guns and that’s all they took ?
How many guns to a box ?
Inside job ....or just real bad reporting or math
All good points.
It’s hard to believe that there was a time, in black America, in which single motherhood was not the norm. The norm was mother/father married couple families.
There was a time in black America, in which the youth gangs did not run rampant in the streets. Yes there were gangs but they were not allowed to run with wild abandon as they do now in the black community.
There was a time in big cities such as Chicago, where families were grateful to move into what became God forsaken housing projects. When those projects were new, they were a giant step up from the slum housing the people used to live in. Some old timers at Robert Taylor Homes in Chicago, told of how they used to have Little League and Girl Scout troops, and some people planted gardens outside. There wasn’t gang graffiti, broken elevators, and the constant stench or urine in the hallways, or drug dealing happening 24/7.
I’ve looked at the historical trends.
It went brutally downhill starting in the ‘60s.
You’re right.
Regarding the last sentence, did you drive a cab on Staten Island too? :)
