A coalition of commercial fishing groups filed a lawsuit on Tuesday to challenge the creation of a national monument off the coast of New England.
President Barack Obama created the monument in September using executive authority under the Antiquities Act. The monument is called the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument, and it is made up of nearly 5,000 square miles of underwater canyons and mountains.
The creation of the monument closed the area to most commercial fishing and has been opposed by fishing groups for months. A coalition of the groups filed their lawsuit Tuesday in federal court.
The groups said creation of the monument was a unilateral action by Obama that is bringing economic distress to fishermen and their families. They want it ruled an unlawful use of the Antiquities Act.

I guess FisherMAN/MEN is sexist now, huh..?
Ridiculous.
The AP has to rename them after a species of weasel that doesn’t typically eat fish, too.
Seriously, I'll bet that's why the 0 administration wanted to "protect" that area with a National Monument--to kill the fishing industry, as it did coal-mining and logging. Because it's work that men do. The Democrats fear working-class white families, so they're trying to keep them from forming and reproducing.
They really think this way, because they are Progressives, which is to say Nazis.
The Democrats hate families rather than fear them. All about abolition of the family, which is one of the major dogmas of Marxism.
obammie=rockfish
Fishers?
Must be a big family.
LOL
They are doing what Stalin did to the Ukrainian farmers only they are being covert and hypocritical about it.
he did that to a huge chuck of Maine north Woods as well.
The people are LIVID about it.
If this was an EO Trump can overturn it, get these fishermen back to work!!!! Maybe next time Maine WILL VOTE TRUMP!!!
Well, on the county-level results map, Maine is mostly red by far. Just like Washington, Oregon and even California.
The power of that Act should be severely limited. That's how Bill Clinton created the Escalante Monument, sealing off acres of rich coal deposits in return for a "contribution" from an Indonesian coal producer.
See the "Controversy" on how that deal was pulled off.
“obammie=rockfish”
No he’s a Sturgeon, a bottom-feeder. He “hoovers” crap up off the bottom and eats it.
I believe that’s the 87,000 acres that Roxanne Quimby, former owner of Burt’s Bees, donated to the government.
Quimby sold Burt’s Bees to...I think it was Colgate-Palmolive....some years back for $200 million. Quimby used her money to buy up forest land in northern Maine....she wanted a National Park, but that didn’t happen. The best she could hope for was a designation as a National Monument, and Obama did just that last Fall. It’s called the Katahdin Headwaters National Monument or some such thing.
You’re right....the people who live and work near this National Monument are not happy.
Fish people? No. Nope.
“This is Gill. He’s a fisher person.”
‘Harvesters of sea kittens’?
Yer a fisher, from yer first cigarette
To yer last dyin’ day.
Mobile Fishers—would you like to know more?
This word problem may be intractable.
For a second, I thought the “monument” was a statue of Obama in the ocean.
Would have been less disruptive to the fishermen that way, at least.
Fish hunters.
Great idea. Give the seagulls and other birds something to dump on. Turning the Halfrican, well, half white and black bird shiite
A fisher is a small mountain varmit. All commercial fishermen (male or female) deeply dispise the term ‘Fisher”, first applied during the Clinton Presidency to denegate and belittle them while offering commercial fishermen ‘financial help’ which was deliberately not applicable to commercial fishermen.
We are commercial fishermen past, present, future, men and women all.
