“Which is why they need to be repeatedly sued - so it gets cheaper for them to property vet people than to keep losing lawsuits.”
Perhaps. But what gives you confidence that background checks will make any difference at all? Out of millions of rides, I’ve only heard of a handful of crimes worldwide.
If background checks don’t work, then would you still feel Uber is responsible? What else could they do to prevent such crimes?
Maybe there is some technological innovation that could improve safety.
They are doing lots of good background checks, but if one is an illegal with a fake SSN and fake ID, then all bets are off. That guy could not possibly have passed on his OWN ID. Hell, I can barely pass, you can’t even have a speeding ticket!
One thing they can do- require FLUENT ENGLISH plus the other background checks.
I have taken a bunch of Ubers in Seattle, and every single one out of 15 rides were barely able to speak English. There is no way they were not illegal.

There needs to be enforcement of the laws about legally being allowed to work here. And maybe some new laws to punish businesses that hire illegals.
I’m not confident stricter background checks will make a difference, but I’m pretty sure restricting the service to those legal to work in the US WILL make a difference in passenger safety.
One moment's thought should tell them that there is an electronic trail of messages, tweets, phonecalls, cell towers, and traffic cams that will identify them.
Only two stars for him.
I’ve taken many taxis where the drivers didn’t speak english. I had a limo driver in Seattle who couldn’t understand the difference between ‘airport’ and ‘ferry terminal.’
Because you seem to be standing up for their ineffective so-called screening process.
When did I ‘stand up for it?’ I asked a simple question.
not the same thing at all.
guns and autos are not initiating the action they do.
Uber hires live people who have pasts and minds and make choices. Proper background checks and vetting are necessary, they are not taking their company’s future seriously if they do not do thorough checks and all else needed to ensure their drivers are decent and responsible people who can do the job properly and without adverse incident(s) to their Uber customers.
We are all independent contractors as you state. However that does not mean we taxi drivers are not vetted. To drive a cab in San Francisco you need the FBI live scan full palm handprints and backgrounds check. Also drug tested every year. Also routine continual DMV checks. Uber and similar do not do these thIngs.
In San Francisco we are required to have digital audio and video recording in our cabs covering both interior and exterior. Uber etc have no such requirement.
I have driven both and feel safer in the cab due to that requirement, the different demeanor passengers have ina cab which looks feels and actually is more official, and our high visibility.
As a passenger you are safer ina taxi due to way better vetting, the above described cameras, and far better insurance coverage.
I won’t let my minor daughter take uber’s unless in a group.
Absolutely the ability to decline/cancel a ride after looking at a pic fosters serious discrimination on passengers’ part.
Also passengers with animals are frequently rejected. Taxis can’t do that by a law which is, hey what days know, enforced.
We can’t reject people with disabilities either. Enforced. Uber is like whatever.
In re your foreigners question in my experience it is very easy for an illegal alien to drive for uber. All he needs is a somewhat similar looking friend or relative to sign up for him.
Then he just drives and pretends to be the legal one. No checking in at the office no fingerprinting no nothing. As Ling as he’s roughly the same color and build he’s got it.
My opinion happens a lot and that’s why many of them drive for so little.
“Can you get a woman uber driver?” Yes I was one and I understood we were 20-30% of the driving force actually. For some reason women are not as leery of driving for uber as they are if driving cab.
I’d say maybe 2-3% of cab drivers are female. And yes you are safer with women statistically speaking!
In regard to speaking fluent English, you can’t drive a taxi unless you pass a three day taxi school which is taught in English. You have to pass a written test that is in English. Then you have to go to a half day class given in English at the mta and than pass their written test, English only.
That said I don’t know that all our drivers are so perfectly fluent but it’s something
Uber has no school nor tests.
Let me take a wild guess on the culture the perp is from.
I’m more impressed with taxis based on your info.
“Im more impressed with taxis based on your info.”
Well I’m gratified :)
There were some problems with taxis and Uber has forced some improvements, IMO.
The grand ripoff of mostly older retired cabbies who saved and worked for life for a medallion was criminal in my opinion.
Other than that, don’t have two sets of rules for two similar businesses, you know? Food carts should have the same general requirements as restaurants. Hotels should have the same general requirements of B&Bs.
After that, let competition happen. But you can’t give giant preferential treatment to one company and then say well too bad for the other company.
And while as a faithful FReeper I am not fan of idiotic book long pages of regulations, some regulations are good and right. A stranger, often drunk or ill or frail or vulnerable, is getting into another stranger’s car. Some safeguards need to happen.
