Polls show Germans generally wouldnt vote Republican, and the vast majority dont support US President Donald Trump. So for American immigrants in Germany who do, it can make for some difficult conversations. [ ]
If you go out socially and the topic turns political, you hear that Republicans dont always feel comfortable. I tend to downplay it [being a Republican] for fear that someone wont understand that there can be big differences in opinions [in the party], explains Thomas Leiser, a Texan transplant in the Frankfurt area who leads the German Republicans Overseas branch.
Before the election, some people would make sure to do very little to publicize that they were Republican for fear of backlash at work or with business counterparts. I think that remains this year and it was less so before [Trump]. It seems the sentiment is more polarizing this go around than the prior two elections.
Established in 2013, Republicans Overseas succeeded the previous Republicans Abroad group, and currently has about 1,000 members in Germany, according to Leiser. The group can at times be overshadowed by the larger, more outspoken Democrats Abroad, who have more than 1,200 Facebook followers in Berlin alone.

My former German exchange student has stopped all contact with us since learning via my Facebook posts that I supported Trump and am a conservo-libertarian.
When I was in Germany in the 1960’s and 1970’s, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the ruling party from 1949-67 was very conservative, particularly under the leadership of Konrad Adenauer and Ludwig Erhardt. However, beginning in the 1970’s, it was taken over by the German equivalent of RINOs.
My brother tried to correct the perceptions but mostly had to lay low because the opinions were vigorously anti-Trump. But, the people couldn't say why or what he represents, they are conditioned to react to the name with words like "racist" and "xenophobic".
The funny thing is when he asked them about muslims in general their opinions were...racist and xenophobic.
“I tend to downplay it [being a Republican] for fear...”
Germany, hell, I’ve got to do that here (MA).
Sad. Sorry to hear that.
She knew you, and yet she let the feared preconceived beliefs of others supersede her own first hand observations.
Poland is much better.
He says I’m a racist. Funny, he lived with us for a year and never got that impression. Now, twenty years later, he thinks I’m a racist.
I don’t know what is so hard for some folks to understand.
We have laws. There are real threats.
We’re not abusing anyone. We’re simply enforcing the laws of our nation, or adjusting them to protect our populace.
How would he like it if he were here, and a Boston bombing took place which took his, his wife’s, or their children’s lives?
How would he like it if an illegal immigrant buggered his son?
I know this is a source of low burn pain for you. I am sorry it turned to this.
The reliable non fake POLLS of Germany have spoken!
So where are all the ADF people? Or are they ADF and still hate Trump? Europe is so confusing.
They can think what they want.
They will be extinct in 20 years.
Societal brain washing. Here there and everywhere else varying in extent and effectiveness.
I am at a point in my life where I just flat out don’t give a “bleep” what people think of my opinion or me. I say what I believe in the way I want to say it. It isn’t my job to tailor the message to the ears that listen in. It is THEIR job to listen for content and comment back to that comment. NO, racist, sexist, homophobic, mysoginistic etc are not arguments.

The conversations may be “difficult” because anti-Trump people are intolerant and frequently rude.
I don’t disagree, but when it’s someone you were once close to, it’s sad to see things turn like they did her.
I can’t believe we’re allied with these aholes.
Let them pay for their own defense.
I had an uncle serve 20 years in Germany, came home an outright commie. Thought Hillary would be a savior. Died about 10 years ago guess we wouldn't speak at all if he was still alive. Sad days, I loved him more than a brother.
