I wasn't enamored with him as a candidate in the 2000 GOP primaries, I never cared for this "compassionate conservative" line which to me sounded like "not one of the evil ones like Reagan" and sounded like a stealth big government guy. I remember Rush Limbaugh saying "he's a real true blue conservative, I am privy to behind the scenes conversations and you have to trust me, he can't always say things in public but behind the scenes he is solid." I voted for him because ... Al Gore. It wasn't as hard as voting for McCain or Romney, not by a long shot, but I was skeptical when I pulled that lever. I crossed my fingers and hoped Rush knew what he was talking about.

Then he teamed with Ted Kennedy to wreck education and introduced a new prescription drug entitlement and (not counting endless war) focused primarily on forcing amnesty on us, fighting tooth and nail to get it, willfully sacrificing all the support of his base in the failed effort.

My judgement exceeded Rush's in this instance.

Good post

I remember that well— the “compassionate” conservativism” nonsense, and also GWB said not to “balance the budget on the backs of the poor” then as you said he came in in full appeasement mode with ted kennedy and the education bill.

GWB was always a big spending, establishment liberal republican. Unlike Trump, who is willing to fight for the things we want, against overwhelming odds. Trump is a courageous hero. GWB is the epitome of the cowardly rino.
