President Donald Trump promised a large crowd of American governors that he would work to redirect power from the federal government to the states. “We’re going to give you back a lot of the powers that have been taken away from states and great people and great governors, and you can control it better than the federal government because you’re right on top of it,” Trump said.

The president delivered a speech at the National Governors Association meeting on Monday.

He explained that more states needed to compete for the best solutions around the country, citing the importance of citizens holding their state governors accountable.

Trump must have read the Constitution and discovered the 9th and 10th amendments. What a refreshing change from the “Constitutional scholar” who was “president” for the last 8 years.

The Principle of Subsidiarity. Another bedrock principle of Catholic Social Teaching that the Catholic Bishops haven’t mentioned in 80 to 100 years. A principle guarded by the Ninth and Tenth Amendments.

It would be good if the states also took custody of non-military lands currently occupied by the Feds.

My governor didnt attend. A boycott no less, from the Republican Governor of Illinois. With all the problems we have here, makes no sense. He's not going to be re-elected, i dont know if that was his attempt to change that so he doesnt appear next to Trump

States Rights !

States Rights is a misnomer. States do not have rights. States have powers. Only individuals have rights.

It appears that Donald Trump now understands this. His use of the term “powers” instead of “rights” indicates a deep level of understanding.

He is a quick study.

Agree, States Rights is a vague term that can mean different things.

I'd rather '10th Amendment' be used, which is very specific on where the powers between state and federal are drawn.

I suspect more than a dozen of these governors did not want to hear this message: they wanted more federal gravy right now, not more nebulous promises of greater control in the future. And what about the popular “sanctuary cities”, which apparently most Americans oppose.

The Catholic hierarchy mention subsidiarity all the time. They've just allowed it to be distorted into secular "social justice" themes that are indistinguishable for all practical purposes from the same drivel you'd hear from any other Marxist group.

True Catholic social justice teaching focuses on removing dependency and creating a culture of self-help and solving community problems at the most local possible level. It's the reason why the Catholic church has historically been a driving force in public education (real education, not indoctrination) as that is the clearest path to true social justice and unleashing full individual potential.
