George W. Bush said he favored a welcoming immigration policy and warned that the media is "indispensable to democracy" in an interview with Matt Lauer Monday that seemed to take several shots at President Trump.
When Lauer asked Bush directly if he was for or against Trump's immigration ban, Bush said, "I am for an immigration policy that's welcoming and upholds the law."
"I think it's very important for all of us to recognize that one of our great strengths is for people to be able to worship the way they want to, or not worship at all," Bush said. "A bedrock of our freedom is the right to worship freely. People who murder the innocent are not religious people. They want to advance an ideology."
Laure asked Bush if he thought the ban was helpful in the war on terrorism.
"It's very hard to fight the war on terrorism if we're in retreat," Bush answered. "I think we learned that lesson -- that if the United States decides to pull out before a free society emerges, it's going to be hard to defeat them. The enemy is very good about exploiting weakness. If that's the goal, to defeat ISIS, I believe that we should project strength."
The former president acknowledged that Trump has only a little over a month in office.
"I think you have to take the man for his word that he wants to unify the country, and we'll see whether he's able to do so," Bush said. "It's hard to unify the country with the news media being so split up. When I was president, you know, you mattered a lot more because there was like three of you, and now there's all kinds of information being bombarded out and people can say things anonymously. It's just a different world."
He left out a few words.
He should have said this:
"An Honest and unbiased media is indispensable to democracy"
He sits idly by while 0bama devastates the country for eight years, and now he criticizes the guy trying to undo some of the damage. What an anus. The Bushes and Clintons seem to differ only by degree of criminality and grasp of public decorum.
In 1970 one in 21 was foreign born in this country; today, it is less than one in 8, the highest in 105 years; and by 2023 it will be one in 7, the highest in our history. Immigrants and their children drive 80% of the population growth.
Civilian labor force participation : Percent or rate 16 years and over
If you believe Islam is a religion that can be freely practiced in this country, then you shouldn't have a problem with getting your head chopped off, if you won't join it or resist it. - Tom
Yeah, because nation building with the Religion of Peace is such a proven strategy just like encouraging illegal immigration wins votes for the republican party- right, Jorge?
Now he has something to say....And now that he does have something to say...I say shut up!!!!!
He's right.
We HAVE a "welcoming" policy .. "Give us your tired, your ... ", so all he's doing is stamping approval on the 1800's Ellis Island policy (which was our original intent)and the press IS indispensable to democracy.
The "free press" is the method by which news of our birthing nation was transmitted to so many people so distant from each other.
We're facing now a flood of people coming in that have not stood in line at Ellis Island ... didn't answer questions by harried, yet sincere Americans, have done NOTHING to indicate they want to BE American at the loss of their homeland and heritage.
We welcome those willing to forfeit all for us.... not these that are here to subvert.
Any muslim that is documented as having actually said the words, "We will take over the USA" and many other similar words (Sharia law will supercede American law ... or whatever) should be gone in 24 hours, no questions asked.
Bush bowing to the oversly-simplistic, knee-jerk, anti-Trump media narratives about “freedom of religion,” and “America is built on immigration.”
It is clear Bush’s loyalty to the progressive, deep-state oligarchy that runs America is far deeper than any supposed “conservatism” he claims to possess
We need to reduce LEGAL IMMIGRATION drastically. We have a surplus of labor.
Jimmy Carter is an honorary member of the ClintonBush family.
“George W. Bush said he favored a welcoming immigration policy”.
OK. I disagree. He’s welcome to try and get his views enacted in legislation. We’re welcome to vote out of office any republican that agrees with him.
In 2006 Pres. Bush asked me, John Keegan, Victor Davis Hanson, and a couple of other scholars to the Oval Office to talk military history. We were there for an hour and a half, and I was so honored.
I remained convinced that W was a good man who merely made bad mistakes in not taking on the media.
Now, I’m see I have been sadly mistaken: W all along was a tool of someone (not sure who yet), and he didn’t fight because he WANTED his position weakened. These latest comments make me nearly ashamed to have been his guest, and I really, really hate that.
George, please just shut up and leave us alone. We elected President Trump to protect us instead of another Bushco idiot like Jebbie!
How much are the Opecker Princes paying you to mouth your defense of their Jihadists killers?
This is NOT a Democracy...America is a REPUBLIC!!!
SDDS!!!
Jeb is in the background saying, ‘you tell em what for George.”
My Freeper name belies how I feel about W now! He’s disappointed me too many times to count. And, now this. Just go away, please.
When will this idiot just go away. Nightmare president that screwed up so much here in America.
I will never vote for another Bush family member....ever.
I viewed the interview and, on the whole, got a very different slant (tactfully neutral from W) than this blog piece. It’s worth the watch if only to see he look on Lauer’s face when Bush said the traditional media didn’t matter as much anymore.
