Agreed, I hope they just dismantle the whole thing and encourage the free market..open up insurance across state lines, encourage HSA’s and for the people that are uninsurable, come up with some HSA credits or an uninsurable pool. Keep it simple and let the market handle it!
“In place of Obamacare’s federal marketplace and direct taxpayer subsidies, the GOP solution implements a regime of tax credits.”
no ... No ... NO! Get the Feds out of the picture altogether. If the feds are putting money into the system in any way, there is no incentive for any of the sides to indulge in competition and reduce prices down to a fair market value.
Think of it like the higher education racket. There is currently no pressure on colleges and universities to contain costs because they know students will just get loans so they can attend. Colleges and universities get their money not and do not care if those loans are paid back; it is not their problem. It is the student that is on the hook for the money.
Same thing for Big Health Care. If they know the taxpayer will eventually pick up the tab, there is no reason to reduce costs.
The proper fix is to enforce antitrust laws on the medical complex.
First thing they need to do is get rid of the sue happy lawyers. I will sign a paper saying I will not sue the doctor and pay his price, if one wants the right to sue then let them pay 4 times the price I pay. When I was young nobody thought of suing a doctor.
The cost of “malpractice insurance” I heard is over $100,000 per year
Does anyone know if that is true?
The damn lawyers should be lined up and shot if the file frivolous suit.
LOSER PAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They seem to forget that Obamacare was passed through reconciliation. They should repeal it the same way, and then talk about what reforms *might* be needed.
I did not see the following things I expected to be there:
1) Opening up health insurance to inter-state competition
2) Tort Reform
RE: The cost of malpractice insurance I heard is over $100,000 per year
My Internist, who practices in Flushing, NY pays $127,000 a year on malpractice insurance alone.
Are you from Flushing, NY? I grew up in Flushing, from birth, & lived much of my life there.
We need REAL Health Care Industry reform. Unless and until Officials are serious about pricing, we’ll continue to implode.

“After seven years of trying to repeal ObamaCare, its time Republicans started working for the American people. A bill with transparent health care industry pricing is an essential element in upending the current status quo one that existed long before the enactment of ObamaCare. So is one other essential ingredient that virtually guarantees a viable bill: a requirement that every member of Congress use the very same health care policies they enact for us.
Nothing says patient centered better than that.’
End the Monopoly Now.
That looks like a happy smile to me.
RE: Are you from Flushing, NY? I grew up in Flushing, from birth, & lived much of my life there.
I actually live in Long Island near the border of Queens. My doctor of internal medicine has a clinic in Flushing, which is about 20 minutes drive from home.
Flushing is practically like Hongkong or Taiwan right now. It is probably the biggest China Town in NYC ( yes, bigger than the one in Manhattan ). And then the more east you go, the more Korean it becomes.
I think his face looks bemused and not pained.
He’s getting what he wants. He always said he’s not going to let anyone die in the streets.
Speaking of which, I just got my Medicare card in the mail since I’m about to hit the mandatory age to make a decision. I’m already covered by my military retirement (TriCare), but I still am required by TriCare to accept Medicare. (They must fuse the 2 programs together somehow.)
My point is that it appears EVERYONE from 65 and above is already covered by a health program.
There are so many health programs already being paid for in this nation by this nation, that I’m surprised there is anyone who isn’t covered in some way, shape, or form by some kind of program.
Did you know we have 9800 federal government health clinics scattered around the country, that there are even more state level health clinics, and that the price is a walk-in?
Is anyone even talking about making a list of these programs and looking at what the various levels of government already are paying for and rolling them into one big comprehensive look at what’s already being paid for if people would just be told? After all, we’re already being taxed for them.
Why duplicate the program OR the money?
I don’t see this as a free market solution. Grandfather in those who have preexisting conditions and then after a certain date, just make everyone buy insurance before they get sick. It will be rocky at first but it will be great with the other changes.
“Flushing is practically like Hongkong or Taiwan right now. It is probably the biggest China Town in NYC”
Yes, I am WELL aware :( Just one or the reasons I bailed to SC about 4 years ago. The asians, hispanics & indians have taken over & driven all the whites out. It usex to be a wondrrful place to live. My grandfather settled there from Germany in the early 1900s. Very sad what’s become of that town :(
(BTW,I’ve also lived in Elmont & West Hempstead, which may be close to where you live. Close to Queens border. )
doesn’t matter who is covered now, they wont be in a few years... Medical care is now roughly %50 of federal receipts... growing at 10% a year.... this is not sustainable...
Beyond Obamacare, the next big issue should be the “phase out” of Social Security and Medicare. Basically, to begin with the idea of an “opt out” from SSM for new potential new enrollees.
SS and M are legally joined at the hip, and in truth exist as a sneaky way to effectively *double* the income tax. It is a con game: if you give the government a LOT of your money now, you will get a LITTLE of it trickled back to you years later. Maybe.
But instead of saving it for that purpose, the government spent it, and more, on other things. They figure that, as long as the government makes its monthly payments to those on SSM, they system is “solvent”.
So what does an opt out for new enrollees entail?
Simple. Instead of paying the FICA tax, as they do right now, the exact same amount of money goes into a privately held individual retirement and health care account.
Thus, the government *never* gets its clutches on the money. Instead it just gets a document from the IRA and health care holder that they have been paid the equivalent of the FICA tax.
Importantly, for those who are not able to figure this out, SSM will remain, as their safety net. But in much reduced form.
And those who are currently receiving and expect to receive SSM benefits, they continue to get “what they are owed”, but using the same trick, meeting monthly payments, that was used to divert their money.
Eventually SSM reduce in size to just a shadow of their current self. And the public get a much better retirement and health care.
“Washington MUST make provisions for direct payments between medical provider and patient.
Let 3rd party payer continue, but give priority and benefits to allow a CASH MARKET to develop between patient and provider.”
Exactly. I just had a cash hernia operation in St. George Utah (drove up from Vegas and stayed the night). $3,050 cash on the barrel head, wham bam done and ut the door in three hours. Cost anywhere from half to a quarter what it would have with insurance. No frills, but who wants frills when you are a guy who has spent a lifetime getting banged up and just wants it over with to get back to work.
I agree..We need price transparency..It is ridiculous that I am responsible for payment (due to high deductible) when I cannot find out how much it is before I have a test/procedure done. It used to be they gave you a cash discount. Now they want to charge you the over inflated prices if you don’t have insurance. By default, they force you to buy insurance.
