The audience at the 2017 Academy Awards heartily applauded as a statement from Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, who boycotted the ceremony, was read that ridiculed President Trump’s “inhumane” immigration executive order.

Farhardi, the director of The Salesman, said he was skipping this year’s Oscars “out of respect for the people of my country and those of six nations whom have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants to the U.S.”

The comment drew hearty applause from the gathered Hollywood glitterati.

Biggest state sponsor of terrorism gets to lecture us on human rights. They seized our Embassy in 1979 and held our diplomats hostage for 444 days. They were behind the bombing of the Marine barracks in Lebanon and Khobar Towers in Saudi Arabia killing American personnel. It’s a damned shame the Iranians are becoming outspokenly anti-Trump in Hollywood... Iranian cinema is among the finest in the world, and I think their expats could have a great effect on our mainstream films. They have to put up with a lot of crap from the regime’s censors.
