BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) - A Southern Illinois state representative is pushing a plan to end the state's program to register and identify gun owners.
Representative Jerry Costello said the Firearm Owners ID program is losing money and creating more bureaucracy for lawful gun owners.
"It's very important to my constituents in downstate Illinois," Costello said.
Currently the FOID cards are needed to purchase and possess guns and buy ammunition. Applicants must submit to a background check.

Funny my wife and I drove down from Wisconsin to LaClaire IA to Antique Archeology. Rockford to I 80 total corn.
The state concealed carry law made handgun laws uniform state wide. Chicago’s gun nonsense with permits and training and registration null and void. They can still regulate long arms, but handguns are now the exclusive dominion of the state. So now it’s only step #1 for handguns.
This is a great example of liberal overreach biting them in the ass. The Heller and McDonald cases forced the US District courts to declare the patchwork of handgun laws and the state’s statewide ban on legal carry unconstitutional. The state was ordered to pass some kind of carry law within “x” days or “constitutional carry” would go into effect—no permit needed.
Now the Chicago liberals who had long argued that guns were baaaaaad had completely banned all legal carry. The completeness of the ban is what sank them. Not they had to come up with something quick. But any law which took control away from “home rule” municipalities needed a supermajority in the Illinois governmenmt and demcorats, holding a majority, had two problems. They didn’t have a supermajority; and so many downstate democrats with supported the measure for carry or saw losing the next election if they didn’t.
Now they HAD to come up with a bill that would satisfy Republicans AND downstate democrats, or they wouldn’t get the bill passed. If that happened, there would be no law, and constitutional carry would be the law of the land, so negotiations resulted in a bill that wasn’t great, but did allow a lot of carry, and took handgun control away from cities. Then governor Quinn made what’s called an “amendatory veto” which would have allowed carry almost nowhere, but but both houses overrode his veto. And that’s when Illinois became the last state to have some sort of concealed carry.
They could have had a very, very restrictive “may carry” and then not hand out permits except for extreme cases, like NYC or MD or NJ, but liberals wanted to ban it altogether. It was their intransigence on this issue that forced them to have to pass a bill that allowed far, far more than if they had played ball so many years ago.
Now, with the supreme court about to be stacked with conservatives 5-4 and will be 6-3 in a couple of years when Justice Ginsburg retires or dies in office, that conservative Illinoisans can get many of the remaining restrictions struck down. And there is legislation either now pending or soon to be introduced which would force reciprocity of all licenses in all states, the same way that marriage in one state must be recognized by all.
We should cut Cook, Lake, East St Louis, and Cairo loose from the rest of the State.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The two “cities” of E. St. Louis and Cairo have a combined population of fewer than 30,000. Cairo is about 3,000.
Combined they are politically insignificant.
Exactly. Southern Illinois would love to become their own state!
Theres a reason they call it the Prairie State.
That being said there are some very scenic parts including NW Illinois around Galena (Dubuque IA area). And the far southern part is similar to Ozarks
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Except, I’ve yet to see a single mountain in southern Illinois.
—and I remember way back when it was passed, the press, of course touted it as the beginning of the end of “gun crime” in Illinois—guess it didn’t work out for “Chiraq”—
One of the only states in the union that does such a foolish thing. Glad I am outta IL.
New York was as bad (or worse) on pistols. Glad I am outta NY.
Georgia is freakin’ awesome. :)
Dude, you rock. Great plan.
A better plan would to go south, GA / TX or even FL, but your plan ain’t bad.
That's pretty shocking news for all of us southern boys. You guys have a lot of work to do.
In which town do you live? I live in Wheeling and work in downtown Chicago (near Monroe & Wacker). My wife is a pastor, and she applied for jobs in NV, TX, MI, and AL.
I live in Wheeling, and I don’t want all of Cook Co. to be separated from most of Illinois. The new state should include Chicago and some of its liberal suburbs that are closest to it, including Evanston, Skokie, Niles, Morton Grove, Calumet City, Chicago Heights, Oak Park, Berwyn, and Cicero.
I live in Unincorporated Homer Township in Will County.
Your remark should have been addressed to #10. I was only quoting him. I also addressed the politically insignificant small towns of East St. Louis, Il. and Cairo,, Il.
Its stupid and serves no purpose other than to separate us from $15.00 very 5 years
It also allows authorities to know where the guns owners are living ( legal owners that would be).
Thanks. I’ll read comment #10.
Quinn won four counties. I live in Wheeling, and I dont want all of Cook Co. to be separated from most of Illinois. The new state should include Chicago and some of its liberal suburbs that are closest to it, including Evanston, Skokie, Niles, Morton Grove, Calumet City, Chicago Heights, Oak Park, Berwyn, and Cicero.
