The men, women and children hiking over the Canada-U.S. border to seek asylum in Canada are risking more than freezing conditions theyre cutting off all roads back to the United States and risk being sent back to the countries they fled.
Usually the U.S. is considered a safe place to seek asylum, said Jacqueline Bonisteel, an associate at Corporate Immigration Law Firm in Toronto.
Its a high risk, but for these people Canada seems to be a safer place to make a claim. Every one of the dozens and dozens of asylum seekers whove recently arrived and continue to arrive on Canadian soil has a right to seek refugee status in Canada. This is on account of Canada signing on to the UN Refugee Convention.
But that doesnt necessarily mean theyll be accepted.
When a person makes a claim for refugee protection, an officer with the Canada Border Services Agency first interviews, fingerprints, photographs and runs a background check on the claimant.
If eligible, the claimants file is referred to the Immigration and Refugee Board; if the application is ineligible, the person may be removed from Canada to their country of citizenship, a spokesperson with the CBSA said.

As long as they are out of the USA, it’s a win!
Ask for peanuts instead of pretzels on the plane. And enjoy “Heaven’s Gate.”
Great, but let us spread the word far and wide that Canada has better healthcare, more free stuff and they really, really would love the liberals and illegals to come to Canada.
The elites would. But the people - especially those outside of Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal - would disagree big time.
Free bus tickets to canada, make it happen President Trump.
Yep. Get them out. Get them all out.
Let Canada be the sucker for once
If the Canadians do not nip this in the bud, they will be VERY sorry down the road. Sending them back to their home country sends a VERY STRONG MESSAGE.
Also mention that La Migra has been seen in the area and there might be a big raid soon.
Illegals aren’t asylum seekers. They’re not wanted by oppressive governments, etc. They just want the easy living, food stamps, subsidized housing, and under the table jobs.
“If the Canadians do not nip this in the bud, they will be VERY sorry down the road.”
Indeed. And here’s the thing: those who are most likely to flee the U.S. into Canada are those who are currently being most targeted for deportation, namely criminal aliens and others with current deportation orders against them for various reasons. In other words, the worst of the worst have the most incentive to flee to Canada.
The moslems are looking for someone to kiss their butts and we didn’t do it the way they wanted so they moved on to another country to see if they would...
Back during the Cold War Canada accepted many from Eastern Europe. These were real refugees fleeing from communism. One was a dear friend on mine from Bulgaria. They became damn good Canadian Citizens and patriots of their new nation. This was good.
Today Canada is picking up a asp and placing it next to her breast as did Cleopatra. This will not end well.
Let Canada become the illegal alien magnet.
Let Canada become the illegal alien magnet.
But ... but ... Trudeau said he loved refugees. He said America was heartless and that Canada was morally superior and would never build a wall and reject refugees. How could he possibly deport anyone?
Trump needs to test Trudeau’s resolve. See if he’s still so self righteous when Canada has to deal with 1 million “refugees” in 2017. Tell him if Canada doesn’t help pay for the Mexican wall then Canada will get 2 million in 2018.
Ha! Ha!
This is “music to my ears!” Finally, they get their “just comeuppance”. Absolute joy to hear this news.
...and the weather is delightful!
