Whittier Police Chief Jeff Piper has blamed Gov. Jerry Browns controversial early prison release program for the murder of one of his officers on Monday. Officer Keith Boyer, 53, was shot dead when he and his partner, Patrick Hazell, responded to a traffic accident in a tony suburb of Los Angeles known as Whittiers Friendly Hills on Monday morning.
At an emotional news conference later that day, Piper laid the blame squarely on AB 109, which Gov. Brown signed into law in 2011.
We need to wake up. Enough is enough, Piper said. This is a senseless, senseless tragedy that did not need to be.
The Orange County Register reports that the suspect, known gang member Michael Christopher Mejia, 26, of Los Angeles who had been serving time for grand theft autowas released early from Pelican Bay State Prison in April 2016.

Sincerest and heartfelt condolences to the family this fallen officer leaves behind.
It’s time to start bringing malpractice lawsuits against “judges”, “lawyers” and politicians who engage in the practice of letting these criminals out of prison.
Moonbeam has blood on his hands. He doesn’t care because the bizarro left in Mexifornia worship leftism and extreme leftist policies and will therefore mindlessly back him.
The gov should be in jail.
Mister Brown signed AB109, did he not?
One suspects that other murders and violent and serious crimes have and will be the clear result of Mister Jerry Brown's letting dangerous criminals out of slams.
And, as an aside, one remains a bit curious about the status of Mister Miejia's citizenship.
No doubt about it. Governor moombeam is directly responsible.
Moonbeam and his demonic-rat party cater to illegal aliens which include gang members and criminals of every category.
All they want is a better life ya know?
They'll cater to ISIS if they'll promise to vote Democrat.
Pretty AMAZING! For the last 4 years VIOLENT Crime in Los Angeles has increased 69%, HUNDREDS maybe THOUSANDS of Innocent Americans Have been Killed,Injured,Mamed,Raped... AND NOT ONE PEEP OUT ANY POLICE OFFICER,CHIEF,AGENCY... NADA!
Now because a Man with a Magic Blue Costume is forced to pay the ultimate price for Political Correctness they PRETEND to Give a DAMN??
Dear Police UP YOURS! Your Crocodile tears mean noting to me.
The mayor of LA is major snowflake. In fact LA hasn’t;t had a decent mayor since Tom Riodn.
he chief is so PC he won’t fart if his rectum exploded. LA contuse to have studies that show they need 12,500 cops and they have less than 10,000. This is ongoing.
LA is swamped with gangs and many members are here illegally so they get a pass. The water and mother of a really god god who was shot on the street walking home from football practice by an illegal related from jail just the day before were ignored and laughed at when they asked the city council to change the PD rule and allow them to report illegals before they were released from jail.
LA is hundreds of millions in the whole budget wise.
Traffic chokes the city 6 or so hours a day.
None of this covered by the Times the most influential paper on soCal and a real liberal rag. The Times runs 4-8 anti trump stories every day most of it no news but editorials on the news pages. The letters run about 7-1 against trump because they don’t rent balanced opinions.
The election in in less than three weeks for mayor and nothing major being discussed in the media.
If you have to decide which is worse Sacramento, SF or LA. The answer is LA by a wide margin,
Now the former mayor Villarigosa one of the most ignorant idiots to be mayor in my time *since 956) is considering a run for governor.
LA is the home of the entertainment industry.
Nufsed
PS: when the state lowered sentencing to free up prison beds and allowed some violent people out early. Mayor snowflake actually said “We should thank them for doing their time.” KFI Radio John and Ken run the clip all the time.
LA’s own, Ken and John are all over this one.
They helped get Gov. Grey Davis recalled.
