Members of the Congressional Black Caucus and other Democrats this week re-introduced legislation that would set up a commission to consider whether reparations should be paid to black Americans for slavery.
Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., has proposed the bill in each Congress for at least the last two decades.
A description of the bill said the legislation would set up a commission to both examine the possibility of reparations, but also an apology for the "racial and economic discrimination against African-Americans."
It's a response to the "fundamental injustice, cruelty, brutality, and inhumanity of slavery in the United States."

Conyers' new bill wasn't released as of Wednesday, but the version of the bill proposed last year found that 4 million blacks were enslaved in the U.S. from 1619 to 1865. It said the commission would examine the entire history of slavery, and then make recommendations on whether the U.S. government should apologize for slavery, and whether reparation payments are warranted.
They need to be the ones paying.

I am with them! I believe that all Democrats need to pay A 30% Income Tax to help the helpless poor blacks, that are in there chairs due to slavery in the 1860’s. ??????
At least they now have Lazy Boys. How long does it take for someone to figure out that if you get off the chair to work in todays world while on benefits, you will lose money. So they are slaves again, don’t have to work. This will go well when the government defaults and stops paying all (SS, retirement, disability & welfare.) Wake up people!

I’m not sure, but I don’t think there has been any Black slaves in the USA for more than 160 years other than the Chinese and Mexican ones the Democrats protect. Why would anyone today be held accountable for the sins of those who died 160 years? Besides, over a million US citizens died setting the Black slaves free. Now the Blacks want the ancestors of those who died to free the slaves to pay retributions to the ancestors of those freed slaves? Who will pay retributions to the families of those who dies setting them free?
Democrat Party should pay it for slavery, and even more so, Jim Crow.

Okay, but put the guilt on the Democrat party, not the United States generally. Make the Democrats pay. The Democrat party that exists today is the same Democrat party that promoted slavery back then.
I’m actually for reparations if it can be done fairly. Which would be next to impossible.
If it could be decided what families, exactly, owe their present favorable financial status to their ancestor’s ownership of slaves back in the day, then absolutely I am for seizing that wealth from them. Of course. And distributing it to the descendents today of their slaves. It would be like a civil action, right? Trouble is this would be so hard to prove. But if it could be proven, it seems just to me.
But I’m certainly against a wholesale transfer of wealth from white families to black families which is what these reparations discussions flow toward. To do so would imply that all whites have benefitted and all blacks have been victimized. Far from the truth. My ancestors were not involved in any way in the slave trade or plantations. Mine were mainly outlaws and judges and Indians and sheriffs. That’s a whole ‘nuther set of reparations, some of which I would be on the recieving end and some on the “giving” end. And some blacks traded slaves, some owned slaves themselves. And as others have pointed out some were in the North and completely unaffected by it.
In some ways I think reparations would be a healthy way to end the discussion if it could be on a case-by-case basis with some facts and history. Close the book if you will. But it would only embolden the Left, most likely, and they would just use it to vault to their next progressive cause.
