After decades as the crossroads of prairie populists and checkbook conservatives, Iowa has suddenly become solidly Republican like many of its Midwestern neighbors. It was one of four states along with Kentucky, Missouri and New Hampshire that flipped to complete GOP control in the November election, but Iowas rush of new legislation has been the most intense.
In an all-night session last week, Iowa lawmakers approved a bill similar to one enacted in Wisconsin six years ago that strips most public sector unions of long-held collective bargaining rights, including health insurance. [ ]
Among other items, Republicans also are pressing to eliminate state money for all Planned Parenthood services, outlaw the use of fetal tissue for medical research, subject doctors who perform abortions to lawsuits by women at any time in the future, scrap minimum wage increases in Iowas largest counties and block municipalities from enacting sexual orientation discrimination protections.
Theres also talk of a tax cut, despite a $110 million shortfall in the current budget year.

AP is alt extreme left.
IA used to be a swing state. Trump won it by double digits.
Well, they sure were in love with that Commie Tom Harkin for many, many years!
“sharply right.” When has the “Ass-retentive Press” ever labelled anything “sharply left?”
and DJT will have a comfy win in Iowa 4 years from now. They even doubled down on the bathroom discrimination law. Trump effect at work..
Good for Iowa. They were pretty lib goofy for a couple of decades.
Iowa was trending left the last two decades or so, but it looks like they’ve been able to save themselves from falling into the liberal abyss unlike its neighbor Illinois.
Alternate title for this article: “How Iowa Got Back Its Groove.”
Good grief. The writer’s disdain for anything conservative permeates this article. Then again, I expect no less from the AP.
But, why didn’t NH, also, vote for a conservative U.S. Senator and conservative House of Representatives, at the federal level, during, both, the GOP primary and the general election? The overall NH state offices moved rightwards, politically, while the overall NH federal offices moved leftwards, politically!
Any with common sense will eventually move toward conservatism.
Kinda humorous coming from the Associated press. He sounds like he is ready to cry because Iowa is moving rightward. I hope he doesn’t commit suicide when Minnesota follows Iowa into the GOP column.
AP is often a fake news source.
Because Tom Harkin in Iowa sounded pretty middle of the road.
Same as Dorgan and Conrad. vote left in D.C. but come home and speak to the Rotarians, etc. and they sounded pretty moderate if not conservative.
Yes, glad to hear it. One of my daughters and her family live in Des Moines, Iowa. Lots of common sense people there; I always enjoy visiting.
Associated Fake Press.
Iowa finally removed the Rat cork in the state senate and can offer a GOP agenda. And it’s not wasting any time on little steps. In addition to AP’s whines our SOS is instituting voter ID. Tort reform has been introduced and should pass this year. And I hope they can find something to weaken the academic libs in the 1/99 county Gov Branstad didn’t carry in ‘14.
All of this...Pres Trump - Majorities agreeing with his immigration plans...most thinking they don’t go far enough - calling out the media for who/what they really are - taking his message directly to the people - calling out the Left for who/what they are - not backing down to anyone...is very east to understand.
PEOPLE ARE SICK OF THIS SH*T PEOPLE WANT THEIR LIVES BACK PEOPLE WANT THE COUNTRY BACK, NOT HANDED OVER TO THE LIKES OF SOROS, GATES, ZUCKERBERG, ETC, TELLING US WHAT’S GOOD FOR US AND MANIPULATING.
People just want to live their lives, raise and be with their families and be left alone. They’re tired of seeing this country overrun with immigrants and refugees, with insane radical educators, and know it all/busybody politicians, who don’t have a clue and are puppets for big business and their donors.
Wrong. Iowa has from the beginning been a Protestant state and Illinois a catholic state and have had completely different governmental outcomes for nearly 200 years as a result. Iowa = less corruption and moral governance and we all know what has happened to the State of Illinois, particularly Chicago. Quit lying.
