The Smirkury Snooze completely misses the fact that the cavitation problem was known in the early sixties and proved engineering fixes were successfully completed and proved in several similar dams before 1984.

Why then was Moonbeam Brown's DemoRat run California unwilling to spend one dime in 35 years, to prevent the absolute disaster of the near collapse of the Oroville Dam?

Dirt moves around over the years as the ground is run through repeated water saturated and dehydrated cycles occur.

Plus gravity rulz. It's not just a good idea, It's The LAW!

No way that media source will ever tell the truth about it. Jerry Brown and the rest of the gov workers steal money from road work, water rate payers and for all infrastructures.

The left wants its 250k pensions and all infrastructures destroyed. Less cars on the road and the goal only 2 class of people...poor and them.

Did you know Brown gets money from a oil company that was taken over by a coup in another country?

Easy. Politicians. It is way more sexy for a progressive politician to name a new foot bridge after themselves than to repair existing infrastructure. And besides. California was never going to get precipitation due to global warming.

Incompetence. A state that was and is more focused on PC silliness than on doing its job.

"But despite the lessons from Glen Canyon, the Oroville Dam spillway apparently did not have aerators. "

There are some sort of water sprays on the sides of the spillway that must have been installed for this effect. Apparently not effective.

Um, my guess: Entropy and 45 years of zero maintenance.

I doubt that cavitation had anything to do with this washout collapse. problems ? grossly neglecting maintenance repairs and lax inspections more likely.

Because the dems are so narrow-minded in their thinking that spending an actual half a million in repairs to save a potential 200 million in repairs is a concept they are unable to process.

It was a near collapse last week. This week all bets are off. I rode around the sacto river levees today and there are many places where they are leaking. The Yolo bypass is a huge lake with rapids.

Wish I had bought that boat I was considering last fall!

"Why then was Moonbeam Brown's DemoRat run California unwilling to spend one dime in 35 years, to prevent the absolute disaster of the near collapse of the Oroville Dam?"

1. The counties downstream hold a majority Republican population.

2. (More importantly) Federal and State funds were shoveled into the coffers of Granite Construction, heavy contributors to Democratic candidates in California, to construct a completely useless, albeit massively expensive, spillway project at Folsom Dam. The spillway repair at Oroville was just too diminimus to waste Granite's time.

But, if you just try to prove this unwarranted accusation, expect to find yourself as a bunkmate with Jimmy Hoffa.

as a mechanical engineer into fluid dynamics, cavitation was likely present, it always is. But beyond cavitation once you get a hole started you’ve got turbulent circulation going which will pound the crap out of everything. So maintenance was the problem, not dealing with the minor repairs that cavitation may have started.
