In an attempt to push University of Wisconsin officials to act on their diversity and inclusion rhetoric, Associated Students of Madison passed legislation Wednesday calling on the administration to re-evaluate admissions criteria and pay reparations to black people in the form of free education.
The legislation, entitled Cognitive Dissonance, listed several steps the student council recommended the university take to back up its mission to attract and serve students from diverse social, economic and ethnic backgrounds and to be sensitive and responsive to those groups which have been underserved by higher education.
Cognitive dissonance is defined as the state of having inconsistent thoughts, beliefs or attitudes as it relates to decisions and attitude change. In an opinion piece for The Black Voice, Rep. Tyriek Mack, who authored and co-sponsored the legislation, compared this phrase with the universitys inability to act on actual change to provide an inclusive environment.
Ultimately, the inclusive rhetoric propagated by these white supremacist institutions have little real meaning, Mack said in the op-ed.
Now, Mack said Cognitive Dissonance will compel the university to move toward action.
According to a statement from ASM, the list of demands include:
Within the legislation, Mack and co-sponsors Rep. Omer Arain and Rep. Katherine Kerwin pointed to the achievement gap between majority and underrepresented students as one means to reconsider admissions criteria and offer free access to UW for all black people.
If no one challenges the universitys empty promises, then the racial composition of campus will remain stagnant, Mack said.
But UW spokesperson Meredith McGlone said in an email to The Badger Herald that the university has done more than simply talk about diversity.
Weve increased the proportion of students of color from 11 to 15 percent over the past decade, she said. Weve been recognized nationally for our work closing the graduation gap between majority and underrepresented students.
McGlone also noted the university has increased need-based aid through programs such as the $100 million Nicholas match and the $10 million Chancellors Scholars match.
When it comes to the application process, McGlone said a Board of Regents policy specifically notes undergraduate applications must be accompanied by either an ACT or SAT score. This approach is consistent with other Big Ten universities, she said.
The university shares ASMs goals of increasing the number underrepresented students on campus, she said, but questioned the student governments methods and its legality.
Its unclear that the methods that theyre suggesting are either legal or the best approach to accomplishing those goals, McGlone said.
Where NOT to send your son or daughter to school...
Three or four reasons this is a bad idea. But hey, if you don’t have enough scars on your melon from being stupid, add more.
Send them to Hillsdale
Cognitive dissonance, a fancy way of saying “blowing smoke up my ass”.
Like hell! We paid reparations and are paying every minute.
Thank you for posting this. We must keep a close eye on what our colleges our doing since we ultimately end up paying for it.
One note about the title, though. The abbreviation UWM is for the University of Wisconsin System Extension - Milwaukee. The main University of Wisconsin campus in Madison is simply the UW.
Let those concerned start a go fund me site to allow those feeling the guilt, shame, and need to use our system of liberty and freedom to express themselves monetarily with love while asking forgiveness from?
Oh, wait, they have no jobs, ergo no $$$! Why is it that liberals can only support worthwhile cause with other people’s money under the rule of law? Meaning with a gun owned by the state but not by the citizen?

From the United States Census Bureau, Wisconsin data (2015):
Black or African American alone, percent: 6.6%
Two or More Races, percent: 1.8%
So at best, black or african Americans make up 8.4% of Wisconsin's population. Seems to me that black or african Americans are already vastly overrepresented in UWM's student body at 15% relative to the rest of Wisconsin at 8.4%.
I wonder if the University will offer a special degree program for these long overlooked poor students: a Bachelor’s of GimmeDat.
Since my great-uncle was killed in the Civil War before he could have any kids, thus freeing the slaves, shouldn’t my kids get a free college education, too?
Yes, every black student who was held as a slave in the Old South can be given a free pass on his tuition bills.
I think it’s a good idea. That university would be totally destroyed in one semester.
Universities are all about the money (endownment). Colleges are routinely admitting more out of state students with their higher tuition fees than in state students. Scholarships are rare, but expensive student loans are commonplace. It is a money making business. How many black students will get admitted if they don’t pay tuition?

It’s amazing what stays with you after all these years.
Obviously UWM is a failed institution. Their students are not getting any sign of an education. After graduation they will likely go into society and as an albatross hanging on the neck of the true backbone of American society.
the Student Association at UWM to be sure is loaded with ones leaching off of their parents, chronic bed wetters, some waiting on inheritance, sexual deviants, some aspiring to be hamburger chefs, and many will end up on welfare. The bad part of it some will return to teaching the liberal dogma to unsuspecting high school grads.
