Four Republican senators have withdrawn their support for Labor Secretary nominee Andrew Puzder after he admitted to hiring an undocumented immigrant as his housekeeper, Law Newz reported.
Per sources, Sens. Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Tim Scott, and Johnny Isakson have all said they will not support Puzder, a chief executive of Hardee's parent company, because of all the hiccups ahead of his confirmation hearing.
Puzder said in a statement Feb. 6 he and his wife had employed a housekeeper for three years but didn't know she was in the U.S. illegally.
"When I learned of her status, we immediately ended her employment and offered her assistance in getting legal status," he said. "We have fully paid back taxes to the IRS and the State of California."

I believe the relevant question would be: did this happen before or after he was nominated for a cabinet position? If it was before, I'd tentatively accept his explanation. If after, I think not.
Bill Clinton lost one of his initial cabinet nominees (Zoe Baird) over this same issue. If there is one thing this administration should not look hypocritical about, it's illegal immigrants.
Well, why would he have to “pay back” taxes to the IRS, if he thought she was legal? If she was legal, he would have been paying them all along. Doesn’t pass the smell test. I wouldn’t vote for him either. Win some, lose some. It’s not Trump’s fault if his picks aren’t honest with him.
Bingo! You said it a lot better than I did.
If it is the same case I am thinking of, the Dept of Labor went after the employer for demanding more than the statutory amount of identification. It is not lawful to hire illegal aliens without work permits. The Dept of Labor knew exactly what they were doing: promoting illegal immigration! But they would claim they were simply arguing the law.
One thing Trump could do would be to reform the I-9 system to give employees far more latitude in determining whether an employee is legal or not. This is little rope-a-dope of pretending to enforce the rules, and big companies pretending to be diligent about following the law, needs to go. Employers should be able to use fingerprints, ID, utility bills, references, background checks...whatever, to establish identity.
However, you will find that the legislative branch is equal to the executive branch per the Constitution and Trump just can't order them to vote his way; nor can he threaten them in the way you suggest.
You are ready to play dirty by suggesting the hope their records are squeaky clean? Over a measly minor cabinet position? A position many others can fulfill.
If you are ready to hit the panic button and play dirty over a minor cabinet position, what is it are you going to do when the stakes are higher? Such as votes on repealing and replacing Obamacare? New tax policies? The Wall?
With the Senate requiring 60 votes for any of these issues to be passed, Trump will need 8 democratic votes, which means the only way he is going to win is to get out and promote his policies with speeches in those states in which he needs those democrat senators' votes, such as Missouri and Montana, etc. which applies public pressure.
I don't quite understand why people think the legislators need to be threatened, perhaps even illegally threaten.
You do realize the press is scrutinizing Trump with a micro microscope and are waiting for a screw up. Why play into their hands?
It certainly WAS a problem. Just not to democrats. Two wrongs don’t make a right. :-)
ON one side you have Donald Trump, and Andy Pudzer, and Trump. On the other you have Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and you. Are you sure you are on the right side?
One you don’t help an illegal get legal status.. She broke the law. Fire her and report her to ICE.
I just want to thank you for repeatedly calling these people what they really are. INVADERS. Not undocumented, not aliens. They are INVADERS.
Our country has been invaded, and we have welcomed them and given them so many freebies it is unreal....
So thank you. From here on in, I will also use the correct identifying terminology as well.
INVADERS.
This is DJT’s choice.
He needs to be confirmed because DJT only selects the best qualified people for the job, and we need the best people.
Our country can afford no less than the best, to conquer the globalists and restore our nation. Confirm!
My question is why would anyone hire a housekepper and not use a contract service from a housekeeping business and avoid the hassle of paying all those taxes, insurance, etc?
I agree, too many unanswered questions, and the reporter may also be trampling the truth intentionally.
Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski again.
Adios.
You’re right. He didn’t know she was an illegal. When he found out he did the right thing.
I don’t think he knew at first but did later. So, what’s the point? He was deceived. I’m a doctor. People lie to me daily.
(1) in his position as CEO of Hardee's he should've known how to affirm citizenship of an employee and
(2) (very big deal) When he found out she was an invader, he should've demanded she be deported and help set her up in her homeland. Instead, he tried to get her legal status, by his own explanation. That's unacceptable. Why the heck would we want a Secretary of Labor who tried to get legal status for an invader he employed?
You’ve convinced me. He should go.
It’s crap such as that which really irks most of us in the country who are fed up with “crooks, liars and cheats!” If Trump has done the same thing over the years, I’d be just as harshly critical of him. Shame on Puzder! He should withdraw himself from consideration so as not to put the President and the administration through this embarrassment of being voted down.
