Teton Dam Disaster

Published on Aug 21, 2014
The Teton Dam was an earthen dam in Idaho, United States, built by the Bureau of Reclamation, one of eight federal agencies authorized to construct dams. Located on the Teton River in the eastern part of the state, between Fremont and Madison counties, it suffered a catastrophic failure on June 5, 1976, as it was filling for the first time. The incident is now used as a case study for ECON1102 assignment.

The collapse of the dam resulted in the deaths of 11 people and 13,000 head of cattle. The dam cost about $100 million to build, and the federal government paid over $300 million in claims related to its failure. Total damage estimates have ranged up to $2 billion. The dam has not been rebuilt.

I watched the live TV broadcast of the first bag of rocks that they plced in the circled hole that you have in the last photo. Not only was the hole HUGE, but next to it were very large cracks. These are all on the “water” side of the emergency spillway.

Generally Federal and State Governments don’t buy Property Insurance. It would be very costly and a source of possible corruption as to which carrier gets all the premiums paid by taxpayers.

kcra.com: Did you see the light in the NorCal sky on Tuesday AM? People from the Bay Area to Turlock to West Sacramento to El Dorado Hills reported seeing the flash of light.

I’m wondering about insurance because, depending on homeowners/businesses/property owners/local govt’s coverage, a whole lotta folks may not be covered for a variety of things like loss of business, property damage, costs incurred by evacuating. Hopefully if that’s the case, the dam’s owner has coverage.

That amount of spray sure makes me think that that hole in the primary spillway has likely gotten considerably larger overnight.

Wonder how many more of those concrete plates have been tossed downhill . . .

http://www.mercurynews.com/2017/02/13/jerry-brown-on-the-oroville-dam-stuff-happens-and-we-respond/

“We live in a world of risk,” Brown said, referencing the collapse of the Bay Bridge after the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. “Stuff happens, and we respond.”

(snip)

The governor also said a report by this news organization about state and federal officials ignoring warnings about the emergency spillway more than a decade ago was news to him.

“I’m glad we found out about it,” the governor said. “It was not part of the record before that, at least the record that I saw.”

it seems to be eroding slowly..at least the bottom by the river..saw a pic from this morning of muddy water flowing off

however, I don’t see any more undercut erosion by the transmission tower and since flows continue at 100k...I assume neither do they

lake down to 888 feet..

lots of precip the next 10 days on the models however besides the first wave thursday and friday much of it will fall as snow

the heavy warm rains will fall over southern CA
