BEIRUT — President Bashar al-Assad rejected the creation of safe zones for refugees and displaced people in Syria, an idea supported by U.S. President Donald Trump, according to a transcript from an interview with Yahoo News released on Friday.

He signaled he would welcome cooperation with Washington in the fight against Islamic State, however, as long as the United States took a “clear political position” on Syria’s sovereignty and unity.

Assad has cautiously welcomed the new U.S. administration’s focus on fighting the jihadists, in which Trump has held out the possibility of cooperation with Damascus ally Russia.

I wouldn’t let anyone create “safe spaces” for terrorists in my country, either.

Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons on his own people. He will never be respected by me.

Its not fair to call it “his country” after what he’s done to his own people. Absolutely I think we should create safe zones in Syria for refugees. We would be horribly inhumane to not do so.

Because the Assad controlled areas are the safe zones.

We can neutron bomb ISIS in Syria and make that area a safe zone.

Once the jihadis are pushed out, people can go back home. Refugees should be housed just outside the battle zone.

And with Obama gone, Turkey is looking for the door, and the jihadis are going to be looking for a place to go. We need to make sure that place isn’t Europe or America, whether North or South.

Assad did a better job running the country than any of the ‘revolutionaries’ and ISIS ever did.

I would not allow safe zones, because I know that my enemies would be harbored there and allowed to operate out of them, while my forces would not be allowed to pursue them back into the zone, or search it for them.

If they want to live, they need to submit to and support Assad. He might be a bastard, but he’s still better than his enemies.

BTW: After seeing how the Libyans tortured and murdered Daffy, I can understand Assad’s brutality.

This

The safe zone thing may have been presented to Trump but had to have been drawn up by the prior obama kerry team
Maybe those great brains like Susan Rice and Kerry laying out no- fly zones under another euphemism “ safe zones”

The fact that U.S. troops by the thousands were to be sent to SYRIA to guard “ safe zones” - but russia had no role except for keeping their base at Tartus and iran wasn’t even mentioned - - made it a pretty obvious no go and a probable ruse for the Pentagon and cia to keep areas liberated from ISIS in order to keep training anti assad opponents by another name while prohibiting Assad or Russia from any overflights

I’m surprised assad was as polite as he seemed in rejecting it

No he didn’t. Obama claimed that as a method to get involved in the rebel side. The rebels simulated a gas attack within days of Obama saying we would bomb the Syrian government if they used gas. It’s so fake it’s ridiculous.

Because the Assad controlled areas are the safe zones.

If that were true then Syrians would be fleeing to Assad controlled territory instead of literally anywhere else in the world.

Just so we're clear, are you saying President Trump should send U.S. troops to take, hold, and protect part of Syria from Assad and the rest of the lunatics fighting him there?

No maybe about it, "Safe Zones" were designed to group non combatants as Human Shields for areas to recruit, train, retrain, reorganize and supply "Moderate Rebels" (mostly ISIS commuters), and to supply propaganda fodder for Globalist - Socialist "Human Rights" shill organizations.

Then install US Troops at high risk with foul ball Rules of Engagement.

End result: prohibition of Russian air strikes against ISIS and Turkish (if necessary) targets, loss of US Military personnel to any Muslim's whim, and further destabilization of Syria.

Safe Zones should be installed in Saudi Arabia entirely at the cost to and supervision of the Saudi's.

I doubt if the Assad controlled Syrian “safe zones” have lucrative welfare & naïve liberal European women to rape.

Assad is a brute toward radical elements. He did not gas his people. Syria was a relatively peaceful cultural melting pot before we started funding the neck cutters.

The first time I heard about “safe zones” my first thought was, were we invited by the Syrian government to do this?

We have no business in Syria.

McCain, Graham and Rubio may think it’s a good idea to arm jihadists, but it only made the situation worse.

We should stay out.

I do not think Assad used chemical weapons on his own people.

I think it was a lie put forth by the Obama/McCain administration. Obama wanted the Arab Spring /Muslim Brotherhood to continue into Syria, after he had toppled Egypt and Libya.

In order to get the American people behind this overthrow of Assad, and put in Muslim Brotherhood (ISSIS), Obama had to sell us a big lie. McCain and Graham helped him.

Christians in Syria will tell you that under Assad, their life was somewhat protected, not too bad. Compare to now where they are tortured, beheaded and burned alive.

It is truly shocking how corrupt our Government has become.

The average person on the street in Syria is fine with Assad and scared of the rebels. But you will never hear that in the US media.
