Three Muslim Brothers, IT Professionals Fired from Capitol Hill for Spying – Funneled House Data

Three brothers who managed office IT for government officials were relieved of their duties last week on suspicion that they accessed specific computer networks without permission, also known as hacking.

 

Abid, Imran, and Jamal Awan were barred from computer networks at the House of Representatives Thursday.

 

They accessed computers unauthorized. They were getting foreign information. The three brothers were making $161,000, $165,000, and $160,000.

One of the brothers has a criminal background.

The Daily Caller reported:

 

Chiefs of staff for dozens of Democratic lawmakers who employed the four were informed last week that a criminal probe was underway into their use of congressional information technology systems, including the existence of an external server to which House data was being funneled, and into the theft of and overbilling for computer equipment.

 

Brothers Imran, Abid, and Jamal Awan and Hina Alvi, Imran’s wife, each made $160,000 a year as information technology workers for the House. Their salaries and time were shared among dozens of Democratic members, including former Democratic National Committee Chairman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida. The lawmakers also include members of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

 

Despite the generous salaries, the four were involved in multiple suspicious mortgage transfers and a debt-evading bankruptcy. Abid had more than $1 million in debts following a failed business called Cars International that he ran in Falls Church, Va., from November 2009 to September 2010. Business associates said in court documents that Abid had stolen money and vehicles from them.

Granted, I don’t know exactly what their “IT” experience and abilities are, but as someone who has worked in IT for a very long time, $160,000+ is a pretty good salary if you aren’t in management. Guess I should have gotten a job with the gubmint... But I am a white, heterosexual man, so the odds of me getting a government job are probably somewhere between 0.0% and 0.001%.

All the signatories were Democrats. Some of the named Democrats had a history of attempting to undermine national security. Two Democrats have been linked to an emerging security breach. T

he office of Andre Carson, the second Muslim in Congress, employed IT’er Imran Awan. As did the offices of Jackie Speier and Debbie Wasserman Schultz; to whom the letter demanding access had been addressed.

Yes. If we have a true “justice” system, we would find out who hired them, on whose orders, and put them all behind bars, and fine them for all the “pay” and damages. We should put their faces on the front pages of newspapers and SHAME them.

INCONVENIENT FACTOID Back in Sept 2014, Senate intel head Di/Fi was whining about the CIA looking through her computers and taking documents. Clearly, the CIA had plenty on her.

Incidentally, besides her close ties to the Clintons, there's Di/Fi's husband's "investment group" and the story on hubby Richard Blum managing to obtain several Billion dollars taxpayer-funded govt contracts .....

DiFi and her hubby know a thing or two about using her Govt status and influence to steer business and profits their way, too (like the Clintons).

Perhaps there should be the prospect of empaneled FBI agents with Grand Jury subpoena power investigating Di/FI.

HAT TIP PJ MEDIA-—There are a number of unanswered questions about this incident, and it’s unclear if more information will be forthcoming. A number of issues related to this investigation strike us as curious, to say the least. Among them:

1) Where is the FBI? Obviously, Congress operates by its own rules, but the unauthorized access of government computer systems is a federal crime, and falls under the bureau’s purview. But limited press coverage suggests the investigation is being run by the Capitol Hill police. Perhaps a little additional digging could determine what role—if any—if being performed by the bureau.

2) Exactly what systems were accessed? The Daily Caller specifically refers to IT systems, in the plural, based on information provided by the Capitol police and the House Sergeant-at-Arms. In this case does “systems” refer to computers in each members’ office (which are linked to the wider, unclassified network), or unclassified and classified systems?

3) How did the Awan brothers gain employment on Capitol Hill? The youngest, Jamal, is only 22 years old and began working in the House when he was only 20. What particular IT skills did the men offer that landed them high-paying jobs working for members of Congress? Records show each of the men had annual salaries of $160,000 each, roughly three times the average IT salary on the Hill.

4) Why did House security managers ignore warning signs about Abid Awan? His car was re-possessed in 2009 and he declared bankruptcy in 2012, facing multiple lawsuits. Recurring financial problems are among the most common reasons for suspending (or terminating) a security clearance, but there are no indications that Mr. Awan lost his clearance—assuming her had one—or access to Congressional IT systems until the investigation began last year.

5) Finally, what is the role of Hina Alvi in all of this? Ms. Alvi is a female House IT staffer who works for many of the representatives that employed that Awan brothers, along with the House Democratic Caucus. She is also their landlord, listed as owner of the Lorton, Virginia home where them men have lived in recent years. Public records indicate there are multiple mortgages on the property. She is also the wife of Imran Awan.

Currently, the Capitol Hill IT scandal is barely a blip on the D.C. radar scope. But don’t be surprised if it metastasizes into something far beyond a “procurement” matter.
