MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Gov. Robert Bentley has appointed Luther Strange to replace Jeff Sessions in the U.S. Senate after Sessions was selected by President Donald Trump to be the country's next Attorney General.

...

Prior to being appointed to the U.S. Senate to replace Sessions, Strange served as the 47th Attorney General of Alabama. He held that title from 2011 to 2017.

“I am greatly honored and humbled to accept the appointment to Alabama’s Senate seat vacated by Senator Jeff Sessions,” said Attorney General Luther Strange. “Senator Sessions’ commitment to public service is nearly unparalleled in Alabama history and his departure from the Senate leaves tremendous shoes to fill. I pledge to the people of Alabama to continue the same level of leadership as Jeff Sessions in consistently fighting to protect and advance the conservative values we all care about.”

Strange also served as the court-appointed Coordinating Counsel for the Gulf Coast States in the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill case that affected the Gulf Coast shoreline of Alabama.

Strange was born in Birmingham in 1953. He attended Tulane University, is married and has two children.

This was more-or-less predicted here and here yesterday, but sets up an interesting battle between the (GOP) Governor Bentley and the GOP-controlled state legislature.

The Governor has been under fire for his affair with staff insider Rebekah Caldwell Mason and his handling of both state and campaign funds.

As Attorney General for Alabama, it was Strange's duty to investigate these allegations, but there's been a slow-down of this over the past year and many are wondering if this appointment today is intended to further derail that investigation going forward.

How about ‘Twinkle Cavanaugh’ or ‘Young Boozer’. I’m not even kidding, either (both are elected officials). We’ve got more than our share here in Alabama.

Prototypical evil fascist big business owner name. He might be great, but who would know? “Luther Strange?” Should’ve changed his name earlier in life.

I wish they’d go with young, extremely conservative, guys (or gals) when such an appointment comes up for the Senate, since there is so much incumbency advantage.

Oh, well. I’m glad that Sessions is the AG.

By the way, in terms of voting, Sen. Strange should be a reliable GOP vote all the way... the concerns involve the ethics conflict (noted above) and the fact that Gov. Bentley supported John Kasich during the primary season last year.

That said, Strange was probably going to run for Governor in 2018... he still might, but things are different now.

Yes. The GOP has a stranglehold on the state offices.

Anyone who thinks Strange is very similar to Sessions is in for a shock. Strange is 6’ 9” tall.

Can’t see where the alleged problem is located. Obama’s people did things like this on a daily basis. Let the courts figure out if the Gov. did something wrong. If so, Prosecute. If not, STFU

Didn’t he have a couple R&B hit songs back in the 70’s?

It’s called misuse of state funds/property and campaign finance violations. And it’s still under investigation. We still care about the law down here; a new AG or the legislature just now has to start over - it’s not the job of the courts to do that heavy lifting.
