Deputies told the station the person killed was 19 and was shoplifting diapers with three accomplices.
They were loading the diapers in a car when a Walmart employee tried to stop them, the station reported.
The shopper told deputies that he showed up at that point to assist the store employee.
...
Deputies said after the gunfire the four suspects drove off and smashed into two cars.
Three got away on foot. The one who was shot made it as far as a gas station across the street.
...
The suspect was later pronounced dead.

I probably wouldn’t have gotten involved personally, not unless lives were being threatened. even then, maybe not. maybe not.
Probably not stealing a pack of huggies for his kid.
They work in theft rings to steal personal care products...aka Health and Beauty (HABA) items that they then go and sell to mini-marts.
If you go to a low rent gas station or minimart and buy Tide pods, batteries, tampons, and similar products you have purchased stolen merchandise.
Must be why they keep the Infamil, etc. under lock and key.
It’s going to come to the time, when to shop, you will need an *appointment*; and a armed guard will walk around with you, to make sure you’re not shoplifting.
I go to a lot of *whole house* estate sales; in the last several months, I noticed the sales that are *managed* by professionals, have a company person located in every room of the house...watching stuff.
It must be quite a problem; one estate sale manager I frequent has signs up that say something like : *If you shoplift, Karma is watching*
The upshot of this is, that these managers have to pay these people...therefore are less likely to dicker/bargain with my offers.
Like Walmart, the costs get handed down to the consumer. GRRRR!
The D.A. will move to keep any reference to the carjacking out of evidence at the shooters trial. It isn’t relevant to the circumstances of the killing, and even if it somehow was, admitting evidence of it would be unduly prejudicial against the People’s case.
What we have at this point is that the individual felt threatened one of the suspects reached for something [and he] thought that it was a weapon or firearm, Orange County Sheriffs Office spokesman Angelo Nieves said, according to the station.
...
Maybe, but it may be justified, too.
Yes, this may go badly for the shooter and for Walmart. The Walmart employee was likely doing the wise thing, getting a license number, description, and calling police. The police would have identified the car as from a recent carjacking.
Sounds like Georgia
Don’t know all the facts. But on its face, killing anyone over diapers, especially not my diapers, is a bad decision.
My momma taught me not to steal by the time I was 5 or less. That sure has kept me out of danger and jail. Looks like it also kept me from being shot. Thanks mom!
A lot of thieves fill a shopping cart with Tide. Very easy to sell on black mkt.
Were the last three words of the headline really necessary?
This is why we need universal free diapers. /lib
Is that photo for real or doctored?
I just ask that because my first managing editor taught me: “If a story seems too good to be true, it probably is.”
Of course, that was more than 30 years ago, when we still had newspapers.
Id fire if fired upon, but for diapers if they ran, i’d check the car tags and tell police the plates, and they could get the faces off walmart securitycams.
I my rural neck of the woods we have a pro-life organization that will give FREE diapers to young families and single parents.
Despite this diapers are a frequently-stolen item.

I would have a hard time convicting the shooter here. When I hear that there was a “commotion” I am thinking violence and threats of violence. But, a CCW does not make anyone an auxiliary cop. He should keep his pistol in his pants.
“Son, you’ve got a panty on your head.”
Deputies say the car used in the crime was stolen in a carjacking Jan. 14.
Walmart will fire the employee for trying to stop the thieves and Sue the shooter.
Gunsmith should be a growth industry.
