You can’t really pin this one on the Trump Effect because it’s been in the works for a while, but Missouri’s legislature sent a new bill to the Governor this week which will be making some big changes on the labor front. If you were somehow able to buy stock in labor unions on Wall Street, this would be a good time to sell it because the Show-Me state is about to show forced unionization to the door. (St. Lois Today)
A moment long dreaded by the states labor unions and their supporters arrived on Thursday, as Missouri lawmakers sent a right-to-work proposal to a Republican governor who has promised for months that hed sign it.
When he does, Missouri will become the 28th right-to-work state, marking the first time in U.S. history that more than half of the nations workforce lives in states with right-to-work laws.
The fast-tracked bill, which will prohibit unions from requiring workers to pay dues as a condition of employment, has been deemed both a solution for the states stagnant job growth and a thinly disguised effort to weaken union influence.
Assuming the governor makes good on his promise to sign this into law, Missouri will join a growing list of Right to Work states which includes Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Kansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. In fact, we’ve now reached the point where more than half the states have signed on.
In all of these places, unions are not forbidden from operating as some opponents would have you believe. They simply can’t dominate the labor market by making it essentially impossible to get work without joining up and paying them. Also, even if you do manage to land a job as a non-member, in too many states the union can turn around and deduct dues from your paycheck without your consent. And since they use the vast majority of their money making donations to Democrats, if you happen to belong to a different party they basically assign your political speech to people and interests you don’t support.
The other benefit which these states enjoy is that labor costs can be held to manageable levels, so companies are more competitive in landing work. This has the potential to create a positive, upward cycle wherein more people with jobs spend more money, boosting the economy and creating even more jobs. For some reason the unions really seem to hate that.
Welcome aboard, Missouri. And best of luck to you in expanding your economy.
McKaskill must be wetting her undies now.
This and many other situations that are going on to cut off the money flow to corrupt people is why they are going berserk to stop Trump.
Pennsylvania will also be voting on this soon. They’ll need two thirds in both houses to avoid a veto, but they should be able to pull it off.
Good for the Show me state.
Would you keep us advised when this comes to pass please?
In addition, Mo. became the eleventh state to become a Constitutional Carry state on Jan.1, 2017.
Excellent! People VS unions.
I’ll post a thread/story whenever it happens and tag you. I think it’s SB 166 and should be on the floor within a few weeks, but not 100% sure. FWIW, PA is also trying to eliminate school property taxes, so there’s that too :D
Great news
Thank you
“FWIW, PA is also trying to eliminate school property taxes, so theres that too :D”
That’s an awesome Idea! Funding schools with the property tax is a terrible idea should have been done away with years ago across the country. But then, so should have public education as well.
NH will hold committee mtg Wed. On SB 11. Right to Work. Passed NH Senate by one vote. Many Republicans siding with Dems. Anyone from NH needs to contact their State Rep and urge them to vote for RTW.
Washington State is also trying to get RTW law but Dems have strangle hold on legislature
Additionally Rep. King/Wilson have introduced a National Right to Work law. Dems will blow a gasket over this one!
And Ohio and Illinois attempting RTW on a county by county basis. If upheld by court...
ND has been holding hearings on HB 1169. Constitutional Carry. Looks like it will pass.
I am opposed to “Right to Work” on one hand: I don’t believe the state should be able to regulate private contracts between corporations and unions in this way. Basically the state is saying that this type of contract is now illegal.... It is overreach - plain and simple.
On the other hand: However, I do believe the unions no longer represent their members’ interests and have essentially become political funding mechanisms for the democrat party. It’s time for them to die since they won’t be unions instead of political operatives.
Maybe one day unions can be unions again. Maybe one day people can make a decent wage again. Maybe one day the democrats and the left will no longer have power. Maybe one day all this will be behind us.
Union slavery must end... set our workers and businesses free.
I would argue you have it wrong. The right to bargain and have contracts between workers and corporations is no at stake nor harmed.
What is done away with is forced unionism, the union shop. That is a worker is not legally required to join a union to work. A person has the right to work unencumbered with the union burden
