A theory that I have been entertaining is that by having no arrest records, paying our taxes, maintaining jobs, complying with endless ordinances, and so on...we have paradoxically set ourselves up for government abuse because we are so darn PREDICTABLE and courteous.

I saw some 18 y.o. thug driving through my upscale town at the wheel of a $140,000 Mercedes-Benz that was pimped-out with tinted windows (illegal), no visible inspection sticker (illegal), and he had replaced the headlights with bright red L.E.D. emitters (illegal and incredibly unsafe) yet he does his thing entirely unimpeded.

It is a pretty sweet deal. The biggest hurdle for many of us would be how to embrace our inner-dirtbag. Think of how much money could be saved by not paying for taxes, insurance, or anything else. Once one becomes enough of a scofflaw and troublemaker, it almost becomes "protective armor" and police just turn their heads.

As for the missing Berkeley police... Does Berkeley have much of a police force these days? The violent crime used to be down in Oakland, not in Berkeley.
