A ban on all Muslim face veils in public places is part of new measures agreed by Austria’s ruling coalition partners, and is due to be implemented before the next parliamentary vote in 2018.
The ban is a part of the ‘integration law’ included in the coalition’s new action plan, which was negotiated by the representatives of the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPO) and the conservative People's Party (OVP), which together form the ruling centrist coalition.
The contents of the new governmental program were presented on Monday.
The proposed Muslim face veil ban mostly applies to the burka and niqab – the veils that cover the whole face or leave only the eyes open. Under the new measures, women will not be allowed to wear burqas or niqabs in any public places.
"We believe in an open society that is also based on open communication. Full-body veils in public spaces stand against that and will therefore be prohibited," the text of the action plan said.
The draft law also envisages a full ban on any Muslim headscarves for all state and public officials, police personnel, judges and prosecutors as part of the “neutrality standard in the public services.” However, this full ban would not be applied to teachers, a government official told the Austrian Kurier daily.
Apart from the ban on Muslim veils, the ‘integration law’ also includes mandatory attendance of German language lessons and value courses for all refugees and migrants arriving in Austria. Those who refuse to attend the courses, would be ‘fined’ by having their social benefits cut, the draft proposal says.

The fine will be “cutting off benefits”. My Austrian grandmother arrived at Ellis Island with very little money. She had a sponsor in America who provided the money or job to get her established. That was immigration policy even to this day, for some. The law simply must rescind benefits to all immigrants. The tragic irony is that legal immigrants aren’t given the same handouts for some reason.
It’s a fine with some teeth in it for the refugees. But, how many able bodied youngsters come here to do harm with access to plenty of cash.

You cannot legislate people to “integrate” - which is the wrong measure in any case. Assimilation is called for.
Either they are willing to do so on their own accord, or they will lie and lie and lie to remain in the country.
Anyone who does not assimilate must be deported after some reasonable term - a few years at best. That must also retroactively apply to people who have lived in the country for decades, without assimilating.
The Saudis have a better solution - don’t let people who don’t share your values come in in the first place, that way you don’t need to worry about assimilation.
I think this is very important. It is a blow to Sharia and terrorism.
The ‘ruling coalition’ in Austria is running scared with this action.
The BBC story said the parties almost called it quits last week.
That would have triggered new elections with the Freedom Party of Austria likely to finish first.
Good idea, but why do the euro-weenies wait 18+ months?
As Trump has shown us, a good idea can, and should be, implemented TODAY.
Absolutely! However, as the West, being more generous to its own detriment, has to deal with the status quo of all those primitives being here, the proposed Austrian measures just won’t do. Deport the ones who refuse Western values. Best option I can see as it stands.
Trumpism needs to be spread all over the world and perhaps it soon shall be!
