DAMASCUS (SYRIA) (AFP) Syrias foreign minister on Monday called on the countrys refugees to return home, official media reported, without directly commenting on a US ban targeting them. Walid Muallem renewed the invitation of the government to Syrian refugees living in neighbouring countries to return to their country, the SANA news agency said.
The minister stressed the country was ready to receive them and grant them a dignified life, the agency reported, as Muallem met UN refugee agency chief Filippo Grandi.
On Friday, US President Donald Trump issued an executive order to suspend Syrian refugee arrivals indefinitely and impose tough controls on travellers from seven countries, including Syria, for 90 days.
The minister spoke after President Bashar al-Assads forces on Sunday retook control of a key region that supplies water to the capital.
The armys recapture of Wadi Barada from rebels comes a month after Assads forces pushed the armed opposition out of east Aleppo, taking back control of the whole of the northern city.
Syrias rebels still hold to the northwestern province of Idlib, the Western Ghouta area outside the capital and areas in the south of the country.
Syrias conflict has killed more than 310,000 people since it erupted in 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-government protests.
The war has forced 4.8 million people to flee Syria, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Turkey has taken in more than 2.7 million Syrians, the UNHCR says, and is now the main host country.
It is followed by Lebanon with more than one million Syrian refugees, according to the UN.

That works for me.
Oh, yeah, that’ll get them to go back to Syria. Not.
That brutal repression is what generally happens when people arm themselves with intent to topple the government.
Who knew?
Didn’t Jozef Stalin invite all the Soviet expats who fled his regime to come home so they could be welcomed Soviet-style? That usually meant going to the gulags, Siberia, firing squad, re-education, and an opportunity for the Soviet regime to punish them. If I were a Syrian refugee there is no way I’d go back to Syria.
Will Syria gas them or chop their heads off?
Get Back.....Loretta! Your Mama’s waiting .......
I’m for refugee city/communities protected by the USA and other countries but NOT on our soil..does that make sense? That way those who are genuinely being persecuted could be safe but not on our soil.
Look for McCain to try and rush more arms to the Islamists to keep the fight going and get more Syrians killed.
None of them are from Syria.
Nooo! How can we virtue signal without them? They are ours now.
I have a friend from Lebanon and discussed going there some day to visit. He told me not to bother because the country is FLOODED with Syrian refugees.
...that’s where the REAL Syrian refugees (the women, children, and elderly) are. The fighting-aged men are colonializers - looking to settle ripe territory (as in the West). Most of them, I believe, are not even Syrian, but claiming to be such, for obvious reasons...things are REALLY SICK in that part of the world, and Canada.
Sounds good, they should go home.
The whole thing has been so ludicrous. All of these hundreds of thousands of middle-easterners and north africans coming here, makes as much sense as sending all the needy Mexicans over to Russia.
I’d chip in for that.
Maybe President Trump should make an offer??
say, for every Hollywood Celebrity that Moves to Syria, I will let 100 in to live in Los Angeles.
sending all the needy Mexicans over to Russia.
Hey, That’s not a Bad Idea! How can we help?
Great. Go.
