Why Sanctuary Cities Are Safer
NPR ^ | 1-29-2016 | Gene Demby

In his continued efforts to address the number of undocumented immigrants in the country, President Trump took a harder line against cities and jurisdictions whose mayors have said they won't cooperate with his plans to enlist their police forces to help the federal government round up undocumented immigrants.

The president said that he will cut federal funding to the police budgets of so-called sanctuary cities — like New York, Chicago, and Washington, D.C — which could cost them billions of dollars. (Ahilan Arulanantham, a human rights attorney, told us on the Code Switch podcast this week that some big legal fights between those cities and the White House over whether the federal government has the authority to withhold that law enforcement funding are likely.)

But if threatening to cut off federal funding won't make sanctuary cities fall in line, the president is ready to try shaming them. According to one of the executive orders he signed on immigration enforcement this week, the White House intends to publicize when sanctuary cities do not comply by "[making] public a comprehensive list of criminal actions committed by aliens and any jurisdiction that ignored or otherwise failed to honor any detainers with respect to such aliens."

Here is my public service translation of NPR:

“Data (our opinion) shows that sanctuary cities are safer (for illegals).”

there are broad benefits for local jurisdictions that resist cooperating with federal immigration enforcement — they are safer in the aggregate and enjoy stronger economies.

Just imagine how much safer and prosperous communities would be if they ignored ALL federal laws. /S

The president said that he will cut federal funding to the police budgets of so-called sanctuary cities...

Actually, law enforcement was the one area that Trump specifically said could still receive Federal aid, to be determined on a case-by-case basis.

NPR, as usual, lies.

Fewer gangs where illegal immigrants gather?

Does not pass smell test. Do not collect 200 pesos.

Shortly NPR will publish another article that has “data” showing south Chicago, Memphis, Baltimore, Ferguson and Detroit to be safer than most rural areas in the US.

Am I the only one that sees IRONY in watching the Liberals stories, of how we should welcome all who want into the USA!
AS this BS is appearing on TV, a banner running at the bottom is claiming , the Grass Carp has taken over three of the Great Lakes and forced out the indigenous fish! The Grass Carp is a vegetation eating species, which destroys the natural habitat for the home species.
Note to Doofus John McCain and other Pu—ies: Kinda sounds prophetic!

So Chicago, Philly, Baltimore, SF, etc are safer? Safer than what? Downtown Stalingrad in late 1942?

Stories (lies) like this are the reason we must defund NPR immediately. It’s one thing to propagandize against American interests. It’s something else to steal taxpayer money to do it.

Sanctuary cities are safer?

Every one they list has huge murder and violence issues.

Then their most intelligent reporter Mara Liasson wouldn’t have a job and she won’t be able to ask stupid questions at the White House press conferences any more. Oh the horror!

So, you have richer counties (read “whiter”) which declare themselves sanctuaries. Now, is the lower crime rate due to the sanctuary status, or did these places already have lower crime rates when they became sanctuaries?

Good point. According to what I could find, some states like Ohio, Missouri, and Michigan don't have sanctuary cites, and some rural counties in Vermont and Iowa and Oregon and affluent counties in California are "sanctuaries."

Obviously, if you toss Cleveland, Detroit, and St. Louis, which had high crime rates long before sanctuary cities were an issue, on one side of the scale, and throw affluent cities like San Francisco, San Diego, Portland, and Seattle, which have had lower crime rates even without taking sanctuary laws into account, on the other, your results aren't going to have much to do with sanctuary city laws.

There are a number of programs I like watching on PBS, but the other week there was a show called “Frontline” which was chronicling the Obama presidency that was one of the biggest rewritings of history I have ever seen. They even featured Tom Daschle as “Senator Tom Daschle” and he was speaking as though he had first hand knowledge of Obama’s interactions with Congress - even though he was long gone an entire term before Obama took office! Everything Nancy Pelosi said was presented as fact, and everything stated by a Republican interviewed was cast as being political spin, and Obama was just trying so hard to include everyone but the Republicans wouldn’t cooperate with him. It was unbelievable.

On average, counties that did not comply with ICE requests experienced 35.5 fewer crimes per 10,000 people than those that did.

Almost meaningless. Is that 1035.5 vs 1000.0? 135.5 vs 100.0? 45.5 vs 10.0? And what's the breakdown of those crimes? Fewer murders and beatings and rapes? Fewer cases of shoplifting at Dollar Tree? It's up to the reader to click through the link and do the work for himself -- which makes this article a waste of time.
