SEATTLE — American technology companies for years have relied on a steady stream of skilled engineers from overseas to help them create their products.
Now many of those companies and their workers are girding for expected changes to immigration policy under President Trump that the companies say could hurt their ability to tap the technical talent they need to stay competitive.
Mr. Trump, who has signed a series of executive orders related to immigration, is expected to soon take similar action on visa programs for foreign workers.
A draft of a proposed executive order on the matter was leaked this week. While it is not clear how the final order will look and the draft contains some changes many in the technology industry support, some language alarmed people in Silicon Valley.

There are millions of technical people the just don’t want to pay what the market would dictate so the artificially flood the market with foreigners under H-1b.
By what criteria of ‘best’ isn’t that ‘best’ for them to do?
Of course there are advantages America offers that other nation don’t. Notably our political stability and our legal system.
This is one that I hope is real.
We need to flood the US labor supply with journalists from all over the world. We need to get the labor rate down for journalists to 3rd world levels. Lawyers also.
But then if that company imports that product to the US, it gets a 35% tariff slapped on it.
Nice try, tech industry; you just got trumped.

Low cost to the tech industry - but very high cost to the taxpayers, as the workers bring their spouse, children, parents and in-laws along with them under the Family Reunification Policies...the older folks, who have never paid a dime into our systems then immediately begin collecting SSI and get signed up on Medicare/Medicaid. When they all pool their resources, they can then purchase a very nice house in the suburbs. The tech company gets a worker at half the cost and we end subsidizing an entire family!
(And no, I am not racist or anti-immigrant - my inlaws came here in the 1950s, when there was no welfare offered, which meant they learned English immediately and worked for everything they had, and they were thankful for the opportunity!)
I think they should be able to bring in people if they are unable to find people with the skills to do the job. Otherwise no, and only long enough to train an American for the job
Real or not, leaks should be plugged.
Having worked for Microsoft under contract, along with another (unnamed/current) tech hardware giant I can say I don ‘t understand why it is necessary for them to bring people here.
Large portions of development and almost ALL manufacturing is done overseas.
All I can figure is that they now intend to supplant all US workers with H-1b at 50 cents on the dollar.
For companies that already have 200-400% profit margins (on 60-100bil in sales), the only, only possible motive is greed.
To think the US does not have a legitimate interest in that is ludicrous.
And then there’s the completely forgotten concept of protecting technologies important to national security. Everything, and I mean everything these companies do is essential to national security. We have processor manufacturers outsourcing production to China, Malaysia, Korea etc. State of the art stuff.
These companies MUST be reigned in, and quick. It’s totally out of control.
Bad news for Tech Giants...to have to hire U.S.citizens instead of importing foreigners at lower compensation and more control over them.
Would cut into their obscene incomes to be denied their cheap labor overseas...small wonder they want illegals here...to get cheap labor here....to maximize their incomes.
Disney would not be happy if they had to stop forcing their U.S. citizen employees to train the imported foreigners prior to being fired.

Only are 100 million working age Americans with no job....obviously too small a labor pool...better have more floods of free sh*t people come.
They can find people they just don’t want to pay. The techies are colluding hold down wages and the government is helping them. What do you think happens on K Street? Our government is corrupt.
They fear paying an American wage for a job, they would rather pay an Indian 50% of that to do it.
Billionaires with 10 vacation mansions complaining about the wages Americans get. It makes me sick.
What they do is pay an Indian 70% and work him 80hr/wk.
They know that is not the case. These liberals running these businesses are not socialist when it comes to profits. I think the truth is Americans cost more than they would like to pay.

The real reason is Americans are cheap enough.
Millions have the skill, the knowledge and stamina to do the job, but (and rightfully so) aren’t going to do it for peanuts.
