GOP should draft Peyton Manning for Senate in 2018
Washington Examiner ^ | 1/27/17 | PHILIP WEGMANN

When President Obama praised Peyton Manning for the way he "conducted himself on and off the field," he might have accidentally endorsed the next Republican senator from Indiana.

With the first pick in the 1998 draft, the Indianapolis Colts selected Manning for quarterback. And with their ballots in the coming 2018 midterm, the Indiana electorate would certainly choose him for Senate. Looking to beat vulnerable Democrat Sen. Joe Donnelly, Republicans could do a lot worse than adding the Super Bowl Champion to their roster.

The GOP front office would have to move quickly though. A lifelong Republican, Manning spoke at the party's annual retreat Thursday night in Philadelphia. And there's one man who can convince Manning to take a shot at the Senate: Vice President Mike Pence. Governor for much of the quarterback's career, Pence knows Manning, and he could make the pitch.

If successful, it'd be the greatest free agency pick up since 1962 when Republicans cast a B-list Hollywood actor as a legitimate candidate for California governor. Eighteen years later, Ronald Reagan became the 40th president of the United States. And if Republicans brush off that playbook again, they might enjoy similar success in Indiana.

Though he'd be a rookie candidate, Manning wouldn't need much conditioning. His scouting report is solid. Off the field, he's a devoted dad, a savvy businessman, and an emerging media personality. And of course, his professional record is second to none.

I thought about this when I first saw the news about him speaking at the GOP retreat...apparently I'm far from the only one if it is appearing this publication. Still, politics is a very nasty business, and the Democrats would certainly try to destroy this man if he ran, so that is something he would have to consider. I doubt he would do this, but it would certainly be interesting if he did.

That was 1966. Nixon was the nominee in 1962 when he made the ill-advised decision to try for the Governorship.

I think Manning changed his residency to Colorado.

I know he bought a large, beautiful home near Denver several years ago after being traded to the Broncos.

If Manning could win a GOP Senate seat in Left leaning Colorado, that would be more impressive, and more politically meaningful, than a victory in Indiana.

Except he’s currently living in Colorado.

If he wanted to be a senator, he could have run against the incumbent democrat from Colorado, Michael Bennett, in 2016.

He would have crushed Bennett.

As a Colts fan I’d love to see it, but you’re right. We don’t need star power to beat Joe Donnelly, whereas that star power could turn the tide in Colorado.

Manning’s got a nasty scandal that’s been buried that he will not want to resurface.

Yes, but can he get up in front of an audience and speak without saying, “Ah...Hmmm... Ah.. Oh...Ah....” like you know who?

He's a family man with more money than he'll ever know what to do with. Young children too.

Stay the hell away from politics and be a dad.

Stay home and be a dad? I remember watching “High Noon.” It’s a calling. The kids will understand.

Which one, the PED’s for the neck injury, or bouncing the family jewels on the top of the female University of Tenn trainers head when she bent down to work on his injured knee?

He still works with Riley Childrens hospitol There is talk of him coming back to Colts front office
I’d really like to see Rep Todd Rocata run for senate. He was the AG who passed the voter ID law and decertified a certain voting machine/system.
An expert in voter fraud that media should be interviewing

Indiana doesn’t have any conservatives who want the job? They have to beg people to run?
