The Polish writer Ryszard Kapscinski (1932-2007) describes in his book Imperium what it was like to experience the Soviet and German occupations--he was seven when the Soviets occupied Pinsk (now part of Belarus), where he was then living.

Geraldo Rivera on "Fox & Friends" recently asserted that the reason why the US was unwilling to let Jews in who were fleeing Germany before WWII was the fear that they were Bolsheviks.

At least they weren't Syrians, fleeing today's warzone.

Maybe not. Of course, some Americans thought of all Jews as Bolsheviks, but most German Jews weren't Communists and wouldn't easily be mistaken for them.

Some people in power didn't like Jews. Some assumed they wouldn't assimilate. Others feared a reaction if too many Jews were let in at a time of high unemployment.
