Besides, if she were for Common Core you don’t seriously think that President Trump would have chosen her, or do you?

Start by eliminating any reading instruction that is not phonics.

My mom was a 1st thru 3rd grade reading teacher. When sight reading started my mom said "Hell no!" Back then schools were run by the community who were actually effected by them not DC.

Then in the late 80's I read an article that stated after 20 years of sight reading California had a functional illiteracy rate of 60%. IT TOOK THE LIBS 20 YEARS TO FIGURE OUT THEY WERE WRONG!

Khrushchev told Nixon sometime around the time of the Kitchen Debates "We will get you through your schools." This, sadly, has been one of their success stories.

Unfortunately peer review has become the preferred method of censorship. I should add “again”. Strangely it was also scientific peer review that turned Galileo turned over to the Inquisition.

I do not know how knowledgeable Trump is about curricula.

Nothing about textbook publishing but allegations she donated to common core causes. Rich from Amway which I consider a giant Ponzi scheme. I like she wants vouchers. I have no faith in public schools.

My son is in a PhD program in science.

He just flabbergasted how much bickering goes on between the Profs about who gets credit for what. He says it slows down research to almost a stand-still.

Choice and vouchers are available in lots of states. C C in all school though so damage done in different institutions.

I am totally in favor of eliminating D of Education. Power to parents is crucial. But the absolute need for a child friendly curriculum is not understood by many.

She has donated to the Clinton Foundation but mostly to republicans. I figured her nomination was political payback. I have several teacher friends who have contacted their reps to reject her. Scared she will pull funds from public schools.

Excellent article. Lists many of the silly theories that plague our public schools today.

When my local public school started introducing the absurdly stupid "Community Math" (described in article), that was the end for me. I pulled my child out of that school and homeschooled him through 9th grade. He then went on to take high school classes online.

Btw, our alternative school methods worked. Son is now well-balanced, independent, and happily employed. Best of all, he still loves learning, maybe because he didn't get his spirit crushed by public schools.

When sight reading started my mom said "Hell no!"

My mom taught me to read before I started school. I still remember the page in the book we were using when "it all made sense"...there were pictures of a "pan", a "fan", and a "man", and that was the epiphany for me.

Then I went to school where the reading books were the Scott, Foresman "Dick and Jane" series — the "look-and-say" method. Nothing to learn there for me, I just continued sounding out unfamiliar words, but the ones in the textbooks I already recognized. Didn't figure out for a long time that the other kids were not as unfazed as I was. Years later, many of them could not spell their own language, and as for reading, they were stuck on comic books at best.

Just recently, my 7 y.o. grandson got into trouble sounding out a word that he is "supposed" to learn by sight only. Grrrr.....

On the other hand, there is absolutely no reason for K-12 teachers to have tenure.

Christians sure do unless they totally hide their Christianity at least until they are tenured. That is not true in every school but it is true in the vast majority of them.
